Bergeron talked about his controversial firing in a new interview with DWTS pro Cheryl Burke on her Sex, Lies and Spray Tans podcast. The Dancing with the Stars spoilers suggest that producers have wanted to make changes to the show.

The executives scheduled lunches where they would talk about the upcoming season in 2019. He noticed they wanted to cast politicians from either side who would provide a “wonderful escape” from the election year.

One of the producers and the showrunner called Bergeron. They gave him a list of public figures and celebrities they were interested in casting on the show.

Bergeron made it clear that he didn’t want former White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer competing on the show. The television host has always been vocal about his political views.

“And this former showrunner says to me, ‘You might want to sit down for this last one.’ I said, ‘Why?’ And they told me who it was,” Tom Bergeron explained. “I said, ‘Guys, this is exactly what we said we wouldn’t do. Don’t go there. This is, you know, not the right time, play to our strengths, be the show that gives people a break from all this bullsh*t.'”
