In the 1960s, royal watchers across the Commonwealth whispered about Queen Elizabeth II. At the time, rumors spread that her longtime friend and racing manager, known as “Porchey,” may have fathered her son, Prince Andrew. Actually, the claim resurfaced from time to time. What’s the truth behind it? Read on to find out more.

Who Was Porchey?

If you didn’t watch The Crown, it’s useful if you have elderly relatives who love to chat about the olden days and Queen Elizabeth. So, when my elderly relative started chatting about DNA and a Prince, I thought she confused Prince Harry and rumors that his dad wasn’t Prince Charles.

But, it turned out she was talking about Prince Andrew and an old scandal that Prince Philip wasn’t Andrew’s dad. Research revealed that Henry Herbert, the 7th Earl of Carnarvon AKA “Porchey” knew the Queen long before she became the monarch, and his family moved in the same social circles.

Later, the aristocratic family member became her horse-racing manager. Notably, they both enjoyed a deep interest in horses, country life, and the social circuit. Obviously, the media documented their closeness. However, they were never able to find any proof of a romance or a naughty relationship.

Gossip Becomes Paternity Rumor

Back in the day, many columnists looked for royal family gossip. The only difference was that it took longer to reach the ears of the public. Over the years, folks talked about the fact that Prince Philip was often away on duty, and that coincided with dates, allegedly, that Prince Andrew was conceived.

Speculation became rife, and not just because Andrew doesn’t sport those famous wingnut ears like Charles, Anne, and Edward. He also looked a bit similar to some folks to Porchey in comparison pics. Plus, Queen Elizabeth kept on with her close friendship with Porchey.

Unsurprisingly, the Palace rejected the idea, and later, so did the family of the Earl of Carnarvon. As everyone knows, Prince Philip raised Andrew as his own son, and no DNA or other evidence ever surfaced. So, it’s been written off as nothing more than the age-old effort to smear the monarchy.

Why Does The Queen Elizabeth Rumor Persist?

People just love royal family scandals, despite pretending they either don’t care or they act shocked. So, the rumors about Queen Elizabeth and Porchey resurface from time to time. To this day, royal family fans discuss the likeness between Andrew and the Queen’s friend. The Crown helped to stir up the old story and that certainly helped to keep the rumor mill going.

But for those hoping that the juicy tale might be real, the story simply remains a rumor. In fact, there’s no hard proof at all, that Andrew isn’t the biological sibling of Charles, Anne, and Edward. Then again, with all the Epstein scandals and worse these days, King Charles might wish it was true.
