Some people are instantly recognized on the big screen, and Harrison Ford is one of them. However, he’s so much more than an actor. You might know the face, and the whip, and his hat. But did you know that in real life, he’s something of a hero? Read on to find out more.

A Screen Hero With Grounded Interests

For a handful of people, they were possibly never happier to see the actor from movies like Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Fugitive, and Air Force One. That’s because the former carpenter stayed practical and saved them from really bad situations.

Folks are familiar with Harrison Ford playing the hero on their screens. However, the real heroism came because he’s an environmental activist and an avid pilot. While fans packed theaters, Ford spent a lot of free time in the sky.

So, combining his love for the wilderness with his love of flying his helicopter around his Wyoming home, he took part in local search and rescue missions.

The Hat Rescue

Local police knew they could call the movie star when hikers got lost. In July 2000, a woman named Sarah George was stranded in Wyoming on Table Mountain. At the time, ABC News reported that she suffered from severe altitude sickness and dehydration.

Ford found Sarah George, loaded her into his helicopter, and flew her to safety. Here’s the thing that makes the story special. He helped to get her in the helicopter and then she threw up in his hat. The outlet cited her as saying, “I can’t believe I barfed in Harrison Ford’s helicopter.”

He didn’t act badly about his ruined hat, and in fact didn’t self-promote himself either. Reportedly, she didn’t know her rescuer was the famous actor until the following day.

The Boy Scout Rescue

In anothyer mission, Harrison Ford helped to rescue a 13-year-old Boy Scout named Cody Clawson. He’d gotten separated from the rest of his scout troop in the Yellowstone area, per the Daily Mail, UK.

After surviving a freezing rainy night wearing only a t-shirt and shorts, he kept his training and survival instincts intact. When he heard an aircraft, he used his belt buckle to flash sunlight at a search helicopter. It worked.

When Ford landed, he looked at the boy and said, “Boy, you sure must have earned a merit badge for this one.”

Not at all awed by the encounter with the hero from the movies, Clawson replied, “I told him I’d already earned this badge last summer,” which made Ford laugh. The outlet also mentioned in their 2015 article, that Clawson, 26 at the time, recalled thinking ‘Han Solo just rescued me, how cool is that?'”

Notable Action On The Ground

Harrison Ford also revealed a rather practical and stalwart character in other incidents. Back in 2017, when he ended up stuck in a massive traffic jam inside New York’s Queens Midtown Tunnel, he didn’t sweat it.

Instead, he started directing traffic, and cleared debris himself. Then, a few months later in California, he and a friend saw a car veer off a highway and slam into a tree. They pulled the woman out of the wreckage before paramedics arrived.

The Injuries Sustained

While Ford saved others who were lost or injured, he also injured himself. At one stage, he lost power in an aircraft and made an emergency landing on a golf course in Venice, California.

While he broke some bones, fortunately, he walked away from the crash site.

Good luck or real skills? Well, reports praised him because while he was in the act of crashing, per LA Times, he deliberately avoided crowded neighborhoods below him.

The Man Under the Hat

Harrison Ford has lived three lives. One on screen. One in the air and another one on the ground, going about his business. What a lot of movie fans love is that he didn’t just spend his life glorifying himself as an actor.

It turned out that he also arrived when others desperately needed help on the ground.
