Disney to Start River Cruising on the Danube
Disney has partnered with river line AmaWaterways to bring their family-oriented vacations to river cruises on the Danube. For now, their are just five departure schedules – July 7, 14, 21 and 28, and Dec. 22, 2016.
“Recognizing the untapped potential and broadening appeal of the river cruising market, we worked with AmaWaterways to provide families with an immersive, personalized experience unlike anything we’ve presented before,” said Ken Potrock, senior vice president of Adventures by Disney.
Disney is pushing boundaries by opening river cruise to the family market, which till now had been geared primarily to adult travellers.
“We think the Disney brand will bring families to the river cruising category, and we think that’s a very exciting development for the industry,” the Disney executive in charge of the project, Ken Potrock, tells USA TODAY in an exclusive interview.
The seven-night trips between Budapest, Hungary and Vilshofen, Germany will take place on a new AmaWaterways vessel that is being custom built for the family market with cabin configurations that can hold up to five people. Shore tours and on-board activities also are being custom-designed with families in mind.
The sailings will be separate from those offered by the popular Disney Cruise Line and will not feature Disney characters. Cruise vacation will be sold through Adventures by Disney.
“You’re not going to see Minnie and Mickey on this trip,” said Adventures by Disney spokesperson Amanda Adler. “It’s about taking children on a cultural experience.”
Trip prices start at $4,100 per person based on double occupancy while children are slightly less.
