Daniel’s move from GC with Heather included her bonding with Lucy. She became the mother figure O’Briant’s character recognizes and Daniel deeply values Heather’s role in his daughter’s life.
Heather is also allowed to still care about Daniel. Since the viewers never saw how he behaved when they were living away from GC, what she and Lucy said about his demeanor during that period has to count.

Daniel was an important part of Lily’s pre-adult life. Their run to California and youthful marriage are fondly recalled. Devoted viewers remember that storyline as sweet and compelling.
Cane Ashby (Daniel Goddard) arguably still holds the top soul mate spot in Lily’s heart. But he is long gone.
So, revisiting a first serious love and initial spouse makes sense at this time in Lily’s life. Whether Heather will become part of a triangle remains to be seen on Y&R.
