Breastfeeding Issues: What You Need to Know From a Mom of Twins
One of the major issues I faced back then was the fact that the girls could latch on well enough (that was never a problem!), but they would not suckle. Now, I’ve since heard that this is quite a major issue that affects a lot of newborns. I didn’t know that at the time. I was genuinely worried that the girls would not be able to feed and it seriously stressed me out.
Of course, I tried a whole load of methods to get around this problem. In the end, though, it all worked out well enough. The girls are happy and healthy — they always get the milk that they need when they need it. I couldn’t be more pleased with how things have changed.
HOW I GOT MY TWINS TO BREASTFEED
As I’ve already mentioned, this was by no means easy. Rose and Ella were difficult from the start, which meant that I had a whole load of work to do along the way. Here are some of the things that I tried and what I learned along the way:
Not all babies like to breastfeeding
Now, this is a statement that may well seem obvious to mothers out there, but it wasn’t to me. For some unknown reason, I convinced myself that all of this was somehow my fault. It wasn’t. The babies would breastfeed on occasion but usually my trials ended in tears — theirs and mine! It was a struggle. Luckily, my friends and family were supportive and helped me through it all.
There are things you can try
Of course, I turned to my good friend ‘Google’ to help me with this one. One of the tips I picked up was something called ‘breast shaping’. Basically, you fold over your nipple so that your kids can latch on better than before. I tried this one myself and it did help a little, but I still had problems.
Other tips I picked up included walking the baby around the room as you breastfeed or rocking them gently. It may sound a little weird, but these two tricks can make all of the difference. If you’re struggling, you should try them for yourself.
A combination method worked for me
While I couldn’t get the twins to feed all the time, they would some of the time. That’s why I decided to opt for the ‘combination’ method. That means that sometimes I feed them with a bottle and sometimes I breastfeed them. In between times, I pump milk so that I have a stock for my little ones. This method was the easiest as it meant that Rose and Ella always get the milk that they need when they need it. In the end, breastfeeding was taken over by bottle feeding because of their latching issue. I’m so happy that the girls did get to breastfeed for a while though.
In the end, breastfeeding was taken over by bottle feeding because of their latching issue. I’m so happy that the girls did get to breastfeed in the early days, which allowed them to get some of the rich nutrients in breastmilk.
Choosing the right bottle is essential
I spent a lot of time choosing the right bottle to feed my little ones with. I’d heard a little about Philips Avent Baby Natural & Anti-Colic Bottles and knew both had great reviews. That’s why I decided to give them a go! Honestly, I can’t tell you how very easy the transition was for me. The fact that the bottles have a wide nipple meant that my kids had no issues latching on from the very first time. I was so relieved when I saw them sucking away.
What’s more, the bottles were easy to grip, tighten, and use. I’ve also heard people say that they are the most natural way to bottle-feed babies, which was a massive draw for me. They also help to reduce colic, something my girls suffered from as infants. I now rely on these bottles every single day, which means that I have to wash them all the time. Luckily, that’s no real trouble as they are easy to wash and then assemble as I need to.
The Difference Between the Avent Bottles
Philips Avent Baby Natural Bottles
- The advanced venting system with its innovative twin valve makes sure air goes into the bottle, not the baby’s tummy.
- The Natural bottles are great if you’re supplementing formula with breastfeeding. Their truly the most natural way to bottle feed because the bottles create a natural latch-on because the nipples are wide and shaped like an actual breast. The nipples also mimic a real breast because there are crafted with unique petals creating a soft and flexible nipple that doesn’t collapse.
- The bottles also have an ergonomic and easy hold for maximum comfort.
- Compatible with Philips Avent bottle and cup ranges
Philips Avent Anti-Colic Bottles
- These bottles are clinically proven to reduce colic and discomfort.
- The advanced venting system helps create 60% percent less fussing at night.

Find what works for yourself
If there’s one piece of advice I could give to new mothers, it would be to find what works for you. Every baby is unique and needs their own special method. When you first have a child, you need to take the time to figure out what’s best. While other people can help you, only a mother really knows what her little ones need! Trust me… I should know.

Woah, I had no idea that not all babies like to breastfeeding (then again, I’m not a mom and I’m nowhere near that stage in my life yet!). When it comes to things like this I definitely agree that it’s best to find what works for you.
I breastfed both of my girls for a year, and I can’t imagine trying to breastfeed twins! I’m glad you found what worked for you!
I nursed all my children but one at a time. I know a young woman who had twins and nursed them both with no problems. She is an amazing mother.
I should have tried these bottles when my kids were tiny. I always tried to pump so my husband could feed them, but they hated whatever bottle I tried and refused to eat.
I’m not a mom yet and I do not know about motherhood but I think you are doing great. That is a good baby bottle brand you’ve got there, by the way.
I had some difficult time breast-feeding too. For me it was more trying to pump the milk out if the baby did not eat enough. I think you did the right thing for your family and your twins.
I was never able to breastfeed with any of my 3 kids. It would have been nice, but all of my girls are healthy and that’s all that matters.
I am not a mom and I’m not looking forward to having to breastfeed. I don’t know what I’m going to do if the kid likes it.
My kids were also different when it came to breastfeeding. My first daughter would not latch on without a nipple shield and my son, who was a preemie, took right to it the first time I introduced him to it and breastfed for close to a year! I am glad that there are resources (like Google) available and that people aren’t afraid to use bottles either.
My daughter used Avent bottles for my granddaughter. They were the only bottles that my granddaughter liked.
These bottles seem really awesome. I wish they had been around when I was raising my daughter. I had a tough time when I was feeding her with the nipples going flat.
That was always a problem. You hate stopping a feeding to have to fix it.
I also had twins. It wasn’t easy. I did my best to make sure that I at least tried to breastfeed them. In the end, I had to alternate. It’s great that they still go the chance to drink my breastmilk though.
I can only imagine what it’s like to breastfeed twins. The demand for milk is high and it’s definitely tougher for twin moms.
I wish I had the help, support and knowledge of breastfeeing with mine, I would have continued and it’s something that bothers me. My little ones were in the NICU for months after they were born, and bottle seemed to be easier.
I can’t even imagine breastfeeding twins! I had such a tough time with latching issues, and I ended up pumping for 16 months for my daughter. It is a lot of work, and important to do whatever works best.
I had a terrible time breastfeeding my son. He was born early and spent time in the NICU so they wouldn’t let me breastfeed because they worried he wouldn’t get frustrated if he couldn’t latch. So I had to pump then bottle feed it to him (we used Avent), and after that he would never latch. I had to try to pump and get a supply ready for him, and I tried everything and could just never make enough. It was frustrating but he did get a lot of my breast milk. Thankfully, there are trusted bottles like Avent that worked great.
My wife didn’t breast feed but we still used Avent bottles when our kids were babies. A very nice product indeed.
I bottle fed both of my kids, so I know nothing about breastfeeding. This will help lots of parents out there.
I’m not a Mum but a lot of my friends are having children, so I will have to pass this onto them and see if it helps 🙂
I remember having a ton of Avent bottles around the house while we were feeding my daughter. Seems such a short time ago and now she is 11. I can hardly believe it. I imagine that it would be challenging trying to breastfeed twins. That’s great you figured out some tricks. Thanks for passing them along.
I commend all breastfeeding moms. Not a mother yet but I appreciate all the hardships of a mother form pregnancy and even after it. Being a mom is the toughest Job but the most fulfilling one ever. and the Giveaway promo will be a sure hit to all moms.
In the beginning, I thought is was difficult to breastfeed one baby. Kudos to you for breastfeeding twins and I think it’s great that the combination thing worked and that the twins did get the benefits of early breastfeeding. You are rocking the mom thing!
I nursed all 5 of my boys. We never used bottles, but I can see how that could be an issue if you aren’t using a good bottle.
When I have a baby, I don’t think I will breastfeed. It’s good to know that there are great bottles out there!
This is so helpful. Those bottles look wonderful too. I had some issues breastfeeding one kid, I can’t imagine two. But your post would help people with twins figure it out.
I breastfed both of my kids for almost two years since they were born and it’s great. I have nothing against going bottle feeding, not all moms can breastfeed.
This is a great giveaway for anyone with a baby. Avent bottles are an excellent brand. They’re one of the best.
I breastfed my son till 2 and I couldn’t imagine breastfeeding twins. Glad that you found something that works for you. I used Avent bottles to store water and it’s a great brand.
Man I can’t imagine breastfeeding twins! My little one never took the bottle but we didn’t try the Avents ones. I do hear good things about them from other moms!
These Philips Avent bottle are awesome for any little one especially those with colic. I would have loved these when I was breastfeeding and wet back to work. It is awesome they are shaped just like the real breast and the baby get no air in the belly when sucking. Thanks for sharing your experience and these awesome bottles.
These are some great tips. We fought really hard to make nursing work and I am so thankful.
Great tips on breast feeding, I don’t have a child yet, but my friend is currently pregnant so I’ll pass this along to her!
Those are wonderful bottles! I didn’t have twins, and my kids are three years apart, so no tandem nursing, but this can really help many moms and dads!
What a brilliant tips for new moms! I really wanted to have twins before. I’m glad that you made a right decision to your twins. Avent Bottles are designed to babies.
I breastfed all of my babies, but it was always a nightmare for the first month. I cannot imagine how it would be if I had twins. I take my hat off as you stuck to breastfeeding – you are amazing!
I know how difficult it is to breastfeed one, let alone two! It’s best to know what’s best for each situation.
I struggled with this with my daughter. She had a difficult time latching and when she was finally able to latch, she was too tired from crying and trying already. It was very stressful and the only way for me then was to alternate and same with you, breast feeding was taken over by bottle feeding.
I agree, a woman has to find what works best for her and her child. It’s such a shame that some mother’s out there try to shame others for their feeding choices.
I breastfed all three of my kids until they were almost a year old. Then I switched to bottle feeding. I wished there was Avent bottles back in the day. It would have made the transition a little easier.
Having one kid is a big task what more if you have twins. I commend mothers with twins for all the effort and hardship. But I admire the most is that even if you have twins you still manage to breastfed them.
These are great tips! The combination worked for my two kids too. Your tips are really helpful, especially for new moms.
I think this is a good give-away for first time mothers.
I have heard that breastfeeding is also healthy for mothers; it burns 500 extra calories a day to breast feed one’s baby.
I breastfed all of my kids and it was a tough journey for me. I can only imagine what it’s like when you’re feeding twins! These are very helpful.
I was so lucky. My kids never had issues breastfeeding our issue was getting them to take bottles, even with breastmilk! I’ve heard really great things about these bottles!
This sounds like a great product. Your babies are so adorable!
I used the same bottles and my son loved them. Your little ones are so adorable I am so glad that you found something that worked for you.
Breastfeeding for two is interesting i am sure! Great tips for moms!
breastfeeding is amazing. way to go for nursing twins.
I totally agree with this post. Breastfeeding does not work the same way with all moms. No matter how good your intentions are, if it is not possible to breastfeed, then we resort to the next best thing which is formula feeding. Avent is the best choice for bottle/formula feeding because of its anti-colic design.
Kudos to you for trying so hard to breastfeed twins! When I tried to breastfeed my son, and he wouldn’t latch, it was so exhausting and frustrating. We eventually did a combination too and the Avent bottles were wonderful.
Wow, keep up the great work. Twins can not be easy on you!
I don’t know the struggle about the breastfeeding yet. But, I can tell you the same after 10 years.
I feel you. It must have been a frustrating experience. I am happy though that you were able to find a solution. Avent bottles was the best choice for your twins.
I agree with you! Every mom has a different impact about breastfeeding, I’m glad that you able to find a best solution to your twins.
Taking care of one baby is hard…I can’t remember what it is like to take care of two babies at once! Breastfeeding can be so tricky so this post is a great resource for twins mom who are trying to nurse.
Fascinating. File this under things I seriously had no clue about with child rearing. I thought all babies just naturally gravitated towards breastfeeding with no trouble at all. If I ever do have children, I’m sure posts like this will come in handy.
Avent bottles seem really nice! I think I need to add a pack or two to my baby registry!
I know breastfeeding one baby is hard enough. I couldn’t imagine two.
I breastfeed my son too for almost 2 years and I have a hard time, there times that I want to quit I tried to pump and feed him through the bottle but it’s not enough for him.
I try breastfeeding too but it’s so hard and my supply was not enough so i decided to feed him with bottles. Avent bottles was really great even if its expensive for me but its worth it and last for a yeat
Oh how cute is that little foot up in the first picture! I cant wait till i have a baby and can use all this advice.
I had to meet with a consultant since I had so many issues. These are very helpful tips!
I can only imagine breastfeeding with twins. Super mom for having to pump for two!!
