Things You Didn’t Know About Twin Pregnancies

Things You Didn't Know About Twin Pregnancies

Many people don’t realize that twin pregnancies are a little different than regular pregnancies. Sure, the babies grow the same way, but there is some really cool things that happen in twin pregnancies that don’t happen in singular. I’m currently pregnant with twins and so far this pregnancy has been totally different than with my single daughter.

Twins Can Naturally Happen

Some people think that getting pregnant with twins is only something that happens to certain people. However, twins can happen naturally. In fact, you’re more likely to naturally get pregnant with twins if you’re in your 30’s or 40’s. This happens because of irregular ovulation and the small chance that you ovulate two eggs at the same time.

For example, in my family twins are EXTREMELY common. I was a twin in the womb and my mom’s sister had twin boys. Additionally, my grandmother has a relative who gave birth the triplets!

Morning Sickness is Twice as Bad

A lot of twin moms I know have had back morning sickness. This is something that’s real, even according to experts. It’s said that the morning sickness is due to heavy levels of human chorionic gonadotropin in your system.

With my first, I had no sickness at all! With twins I was extremely sick till 15 or so weeks.

More Heartburn, Sorry Twin Moms

Say it isn’t so! Sorry, twin moms, experts also say that women who are pregnant with twins may experience bad heartburn. While this isn’t fun, just think of the end goal and how you just want to healthy babies at the end.

You’ll Need Twice as Much Nutrients

I’m not saying you need to eat two chocolate donuts, instead of one. I’m saying that your body will need more fruits, veggies, and various vitamins and nutrients. It’s best to eat as healthy as you can, so that your babies are getting all those good nutrients. Unfortunately, sugar and fatty foods don’t offer those nutrients.

Higher Weight Gain

While this isn’t true for every twin mom out there, some moms who are pregnant with twins do gain more weight. It only makes sense, considering you’re carrying two babies in there. Try to relax about this, knowing that your babies are growing is always a great thing!

You may wonder how you can deal with more morning sickness, weight gain, and ensuring you’re eating healthy for two babies. Take it one day at a time! If you have questions, always ask your doctor or midwife. You can also join a support group online for moms-to-be with twins. You can ask questions and get advice from other women who have “been there and done that.”

I thought I wanted twins but now I changed my mind. LOL My first pregnancy was bad enough when it comes to the morning sickness thing. Now that we’re trying to get pregnant again, I am very excited to get a positive on my free ttckit PTs but I’m dreading the morning sickness. Oh gosh, I take back what I said about wanting twins! LOL

I’m not so sure that any of these facts about twin pregnancies were shocking to me at all. The only thing that I think is absolutely awful is double the morning sickness. I was so incredibly sick throughout both of my pregnancies…I can’t imagine it being much worse.

I had NO idea you needed twice the amount of nutrients. This is probably good to know considering my changes of having twins is very high. My husband is a twin and grandmother is a twin, so doctors say chances are high. It’s a blessing either way!

I have twin girls, and it was alright. I didn’t really have any complications like the doctor advised. Everything felt pretty much normal for me, I didn’t even have the morning sickness.

I am a twin. I have a twin brother. Being a fraternal twin my doctor also told me I can have twins since I have the gene to release more than one egg. Identical twins are incredibe! One egg separating into two! Same DNA!

I had no clue about the things you go through with twin pregnancies. My mom is a twin and luckily for me, it skipped a generation!

These are some good things that I didn’t know. I have a friend I am following on Facebook along her twin journey.

  23. Coralie says

Even with all of these downsides, I would still rather have twins and get it over with at once. I have four kids already and all of my pregnancies were hard because I was sick as a dog almost the entire pregnancy and had major back problems.
