L. Ron Hubbard Urban Legend: Wife Polly’s Ultimate Revenge
Before the fame and bigamy scandals, L. Ron Hubbard's first wife, Polly, allegedly scored the ultimate revenge.

According to accounts repeated by some L. Ron Hubbard biographers and on social media, before he became a famous public figure, a quiet drama happened during his marriage to Margaret “Polly” Grubb. And that story became an urban legend thoroughly approved of even today.
The Legend
At some point during their marriage, Polly reportedly discovered two love letters Hubbard wrote to different women. Apparently, he’d left them unattended in the outgoing mail.
The story produced an intriguing peek at Polly’s character. She found the envelopes and read the letters. Then, instead of throwing a massive fit about it, she quietly swapped the letters over.

Each woman got the wrong letter, and to this day, Polly gets a standing ovation on social media. Actually, the story did the rounds online for years. But it never loses the interest of folks who love the urban legend.
The Fallout
Recently, @officialmbf on Instagram reshared the story about L. Ron Hubbard, and reminded followers how she did the trick with the letters and “let the mail do the rest.” Like any good story, it pretty much leaves it up to the reader to imagine the fallout for Hubbard.
Is it true? Well, it’s the sort of anecdote that seems to find some legs mostly in the retelling of the tale. Probably, it happened before World War II, so writers could use it as an example of the troubled marriage.
The Bigamy
There were documented affairs and the Sara Northrup one seemed scandalous. In 1945, they met in Pasadena after a reportedly dismal World War II performance, losing command of two vessels.
He’d gotten into the occult and Sara was involved in that sort of thing, per Cole Magazines. However, it wasn’t just a meeting of minds. That’s because they tied the knot in 1946 even though he was still married to a cleary vengeful Polly Grubb.
Readers React
When the post on Instagram arrived, it came with a long extract about the alleged swapping of letters. Many people took the time to read it, and then the comments flowed in.
One of them wrote, “Legendary and elegant revenge.”
