Hero Poodle Squilliam Saves Owner From Devastating House Fire
The determined poodle woke his owner just moments before flames destroyed their New Jersey home.

Monday seems like a great day for some positive news, and so this week’s animal hero is Squilliam. There’s a sweet story out about how the poodle, aged nearly 4, saved his owner’s life. Read on for more details.
What Happened
Aida Kelly lives in West Milford, New Jersey. And she probably owes her pup her life. That’s because in the wee hours of June 19, Squilliam jumped up on her bed and wouldn’t stop barking.
Initially, Kelly felt irritated, as you do when dogs bark for no reason. Well, irritation didn’t stop the pup. Squilliam refused to quiet down. His stubbornness paid off.
Thick smoke was already crawling through the house. Flames had engulfed the living room, blocking normal exit routes. Kelly grabbed her poodle and fled the Elm Street home. Soon, the entire house became a flaming inferno.

The mechanical smoke alarms remained silent until after Squilliam acted. As noted by the website Sunny Skyz, the heroic pet managed to save his owner “moments before home goes up in flames.” So far, folks investigating the fire think it involved a faulty extension cord.
Red’s Rescue in Missouri
This month’s fire safety incident reflects a wider pattern. Alert pets outperform technology again and again.
In Missouri, a dog named Red performed a similar miracle. In January, the dog woke his 66-year-old owner during a dangerous basement fire in Johnson County.
According to a report by KCTV5 News, local authorities called the canine “man’s best friend” after he successfully pulled off a late-night rescue. Thanks to Red, the owner escaped before the structure collapsed entirely.
Fillmore Sounds the Alarm in California
Back in April, another fire alert helped out in Tustin, California. That involved a German Shorthaired Pointer named Fillmore. LA Times reported that that pup also stuck in barking mode, He woke his family.
Turned out a massive fire had started in a garage. The fire burned through their ceiling.
Why Dogs Detect Danger First
Dogs like Squilliam, Red, and Fillmore don’t just rely on luck. They have senses that detect emergencies before humans are aware of trouble.
Obviously, it helps if owners recognize the signals their pets send them.
Did you know that you can train your dog to help you out in dangerous situations? Per Partners in Training, you can actually teach your dog to “alert to sounds and alarms.”
One way is to make a sharp noise and then give your dog a treat as a reward. Or, maybe a toy if weight issues are a problem.
Most dogs naturally react to strange smells and shifting light patterns. But structured reinforcement helps focus that panic into a deliberate wakeup call.
You cannot buy that kind of security at a hardware store. Hardware stores rarely require belly rubs.
The Takeaway
Squilliam, Red, and Fillmore persisted in alerting their owners to danger. And their owners made a good call by paying attention.
Sleep matters. So does paying attention. Not every bark fills a void and becomes something to ignore.
Ignore them at your peril. They might be trying to save your life.
