Gloria Ramirez: What Killed ‘The Toxic Lady’ – Bizarre Symptoms
The bizarre 1994 case of Gloria Ramirez, the woman whose hospital admission left emergency room staff incapacitated.

If you never heard of Gloria Ramirez, who was termed “The Toxic Lady,” then you missed out on one of the strangest and mysterious deaths ever. Sadly, she was just 31 years old when she passed away and many hospital staff ended up extremely unwell. Read on for more details.
A Cancer Patient
In 1994, Gloria ended up admitted to a Riverside hospital in California. That might not sound terribly surprising because the divorced mom of two kids had been diagnosed with cancer. While her cancer was treatable, she didn’t have medical insurance, so apparently, she self-medicated.
The mystery doesn’t end with her falling ill, possibly from her self-treatment. Instead, it became extremely bizarre in a series of events still questioned to this day. Some of the medical staff in attendance fell ill, many of them women. Initially, they were in fact, presumed to be suffering from some sort of delusional “mass hysteria.” As you can imagine, that didn’t go down well with the professional medical staff involved.
What happened During The Bizarre Admission
In 2024, Real Crime on YouTube took another look at “The Toxic Lady” story. There, viewers were reminded that Gloria Ramirez was admitted while suffering from what seemed to be a lot of delusional confusion. No issues out of the ordinary yet, right? Well, that soon changed.
Per Unresolved Me, one member of staff drew a blood sample, and suddenly, an “ammonia” smell filled the emergency room. Before that, other oddities happened. For example, her skin started exuding a thick “oily film.” That came after doctors treated her with “diazepam, midazolam, and lorazepam.”

The next thing that happened involved a cardiac arrest and the attempts to resuscitate her. If you’re not wondering about weird ammonia smells and oily skin, this might get your attention. Someone noticed that Gloria seemed to have “crystals in her blood.”
The Sick Medical Professionals
That’s where the sad death gets more and more inexplicable: because a number of people ended up fainting. These were professional folk who had experience in hospital environments. Some of them ended up in hospital with further complications; hence the “Toxic Lady” moniker.
Officially, Gloria Ramirez died from kidney failure, not that her family bought into that. Apparently, she treated herself with something called Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). Allegedly, she self-medicated with the strong degreaser as word on the street suggested it helped cancer victims. Note: in the light of what happened to Gloria Ramirez perhaps it’s best not to self-medicate.
The DSMO Theory
Maybe due to the other people in the ER who fell ill, suspicions arose that the woman had high levels of radiation. Anyway, that wasn’t the case, but the “Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory,” usually focused on “nuclear” research, checked it out. They concluded that the DMSO, apparently used for pain relief, caused the strange oily skin and odors.
Well, it’s very possible, but no record emerged of her ever owning any DMSO. Plus, how do you recreate her weird complications without killing the subject? And explain this: another examination revealed “her heart was missing.” Lost body parts, strange reactions in folks near her who ended up with health complications, and crystals in the blood didn’t cut it for plenty of folks.
In the video below, Gloria’s story starts at the 19:46 marker.

In the comments section, one viewer wrote, “MASS HYSTERIA!? the chance this is hysteria is 0% I work in a large inner city Emergency room. If you don’t get at least two gunshot victims a shift.. its considered slow. It takes ALOT (sic) to faze us.”
Here are a few more responses from the discussion that followed:
- Mass hysteria being the cause for the incident in the emergency room is the most ridiculous conclusion that I have heard in a long time.
- If what you are saying is true then isn’t it possible that Ramirez actually died from the…chemical? And not from liver damage?
- What happened to G. Ramirez’s blood specimen? Where did the crystals go? Something doesn’t add up.
- It’s a shame that a well-equipped, federally funded national laboratory returned a diagnosis of “mass hysteria” initially and had to be assisted by a hospital nurse before the lab was able to come out with the real one.
