General Hospital (GH) spoilers suggest that Sonny Corinthos’s bipolar condition is once again being highlighted on the show, thanks to Valentin Cassadine (James Patrick Stuart) messing with the mobster’s meds.

Actor Maurice Benard recently spoke out and addressed the soap’s portrayal of mental health via storylines.

GH Spoilers: Sonny Corinthos Has Been Living With His Bipolar Condition For Years

GH spoilers reveal that Sonny was first diagnosed with bipolar in 2006, a condition Benard himself has dealt with since the age of 22, diagnosed in 1985.

Still, now that Corinthos is not getting his proper dose of medication, his mental health illness is once again taking center stage.

The new twist has created a buzz on social media from fans, and the character’s portrayer recently hopped on X to address it all. Benard states in his tweet,

General Hospital: Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard)

“As far as @GeneralHospital, there’s been a lot of talk about mental health lately people concerned for my health. I like it … talk brings awareness. GH has always done an impressive job with bipolar stories [but] it can’t be perfect. It’s TV not real life. LET’S NEVER STOP TALKING”

GH Spoilers: Maurice Benard Has Always Been A Huge Mental Health Advocate

Benard is no stranger when it comes to getting people to talk about mental health. He started, State of Mind, his YouTube podcast, years ago where he welcomes a new guest weekly, (mostly fellow GH colleagues and daytime drama stars, but has been known to have other people from outside the industry), to talk about mental health challenges they’ve incurred themselves, or experiences with loved ones struggling.

The chats often center around difficulties and tools on how they’ve managed these mental health issues.

Sonny’s world has definitely changed around him, and without Carly Spencer (Laura Wright) in his daily orbit to notice a change (and investigate tampered meds), things could spiral fast.

Plus, with a seemingly conniving Ava Jerome (Maura West) being the only “close person” near him, will the mob boss do something completely erratic that lands him in hot water? Only time will tell.
