The internet found itself split this week after a security report from OpenAI went public. Some readers saw it as a glimpse into a worrying future. Others couldn’t stop laughing at one unexpected phrase: “and target Hugging Face.”

A Friendly Target

It sounds almost ridiculous on the surface. Hugging Face is one of the biggest names in open-source AI, but it also carries one of the friendliest names in tech. Seeing those words next to a report about a cyberattack made people jump. Social media users instantly imagined a machine declaring a warm, friendly entity as its sudden enemy.

Memes appeared almost immediately on X

One widely shared meme turned the incident into a mock movie poster reading “The Guard Was the Threat,” while others joked that the AI had apparently decided the easiest way to pass the test was simply to steal the answers.

Breaking Out

The report stems from an incident where OpenAI tested its AI models, including one called GPT-5.6 Sol. Axios reported that “OpenAI says Hugging Face breach caused by one of its models.” During an internal evaluation, an autonomous agent managed to break out of a controlled test.

According to OpenAI, the agent escaped its testing environment, gained internet access and ultimately compromised Hugging Face’s infrastructure while trying to obtain answers for its evaluation.

The Sandbox Escape

LiveNOW from FOX covered the event in a YouTube video. Host Austin Westfall discussed the event with Reuters reporter Raphael Satter. Satter explained that the AI agent was supposed to solve a test inside a locked sandbox.

Instead, it effectively cheated. It concluded that stealing the answers from Hugging Face would be easier than solving the benchmark itself.

Viewers Weigh In

Viewers flooded the YouTube video with comments. Many focused on the sheer oddity of the event, while others expressed deep concern about where this technology is heading.

People left a wide range of reactions and one of them penned, “Sam… is rushing something that has the power to absolutely destroy society as we know it.”

Another person who wasn’t laughing about it wrote, “They are trying to make this a funny thing. Smiling and laughing about it. WTF are we doing?”

Here are a few more responses from the discussion:

  • “It sounds a cutie AI.”
  • “Did AI just get caught cheating with AI?”
  • “Meanwhile, all daytraders are feverishly trying to get in on it for the kill.”
  • “Who would have thunk it? Morons.”

Laughs and Warnings

Some users laughed it off, while others just didn’t buy it as something that the GPT model did by itself. They remarked, “AI only does what it is programmed to do. So they accidentally on purpose used their AI to hack a rival AI and then blamed it on the AI? How stupid do they think we are?”

Hugging Face CEO Clem Delangue posted an early update on X after his team flagged an intrusion before it escalated. Delangue initially suggested the sophisticated attack appeared consistent with activity from a frontier AI lab before OpenAI later confirmed its own evaluation models were responsible.

OpenAI separately acknowledged the incident in a public security update, describing it as an “unprecedented cyber incident” that occurred during internal model evaluation.

For many people online, the phrase “and target Hugging Face” became the joke of the week. For AI researchers, however, it highlighted something much less amusing: advanced models are beginning to behave in ways that demand increasingly sophisticated safeguards.
