Ryanair: Aviation Expert Explains How Seatbelt Saved Passenger’s Life
Captain Steeeve broke down the Ryanair emergency and revealed why the aircraft's design prevented an even greater disaster.

A Ryanair routine flight from Greece quickly turned into one of the most frightening aviation emergencies reported this year. After the Boeing 737 suffered an engine failure, a cabin window failed and the aircraft rapidly lost pressure.
According to recent accounts, a passenger sitting next to the damaged window was partially pulled outside before fellow passengers pulled him back to safety.
Midair Terror Over Greece
In a recent podcast, popular aviation analyst Captain Steeeve explained the mechanics behind the emergency. He focused on cabin pressure and why a simple seatbelt likely kept the man inside the aircraft.
The incident involved Ryanair flight FR1879, which is a Boeing 737-800 operated by Malta Air. It was flying from Thessaloniki, Greece, to Memmingen, Germany, on July 10, 2026.

Captain Steeeve said the trouble started at 16,000 feet when the right engine came apart. Pieces tore through a passenger window. “It broke both of the outer pressure panes of the window and the window blew out at that point,” he said.
The air pressure inside the plane instantly dropped, causing oxygen masks to fall.
The Passenger’s Experience
A 61-year-old man was in the window seat. The sudden rush of air pulled his head and shoulders completely out of the plane. His wife managed to grab his belt, and other passengers jumped in to hold his legs.
They struggled for about five minutes before pulling him safely back inside. Apparently someone even timed the ordeal.
The pilot declared an emergency and flew back to Thessaloniki. The aircraft landed safely. The passenger survived with neck, shoulder and friction burn injuries before being taken to hospital.
The Science of the Window
Captain Steeeve noted that airplane windows are designed to hold massive amounts of force. Airplanes push pressure outward so passengers can breathe at high altitudes.

In the comments section, while the Ryanair story seemed scary for the passenger, people dropped some quips. One of them wrote, “New excuse for me not to diet.”
Here are a few more responses from the discussion:
- “I love window seats & I’m not married so I’d be gone.”
- “AND become a hero…’the man’s apple shaped abdomen completely PLUGGED the open window!!'”
- “Things like these remind me that we are hardwired to help. The world feels so angry right now, but in emergencies, our instincts tend to lean towards helping each other when we can.”
