Mystery Story: The Vintém Hill Enigma, UFOs, Toxins, Deadly Cult?

Two technicians, lead masks, and a cryptic note: The 1966 Vintém Hill mystery that still baffles the world today.

Unsolved Mystery - The Lead Mask Case From Brazil

Amid news about Iran and wars, it seems like a cool escape is taking a look at an old mystery that survives to this day. And why not? Sometimes everyone could use a timeline cleanser that might spark a fun conversation with family or friends. Read on for our choice this week.

The 1966 Mystery In Brazil

A 1966 mystery from Brazil still puzzles law enforcement, psychics, paranormal folks, and more. Back in August of that year, as there were no gaming consoles, a young boy went outside to fly a kite. In fact, he made a good choice going to Vintém Hill in Niterói near Rio de Janeiro. After all, it gets pretty windy up there. Well, he found more than wind, because he discovered two dead men.

Notably, they weren’t just dead men. Weirdly, they lay on the grass next to each other as if they just took a nap. But more than that, in sharp contrast to their polished up appearence in suits and waterproof coats, they wore masks.

The Masks Were Just One Oddity

The mystery of the masks still puzzles seekers who check out the paranormal. Made of lead sheeting, they looked rather like eye-protective sunglasses, per the Haunted Bunker Panormal Mysteries podcast. Naturally, the boy skedaddled back down the hill, and soon law enforcement got involved. Clearly, while it seemed odd, it could have been a true crime.

In time, the two guys were identified as residents from a town far away. They lived in a place 200 km from where their bodies were found. Interestingly, both of them worked as electronics technicians.

Two Techicians Who Lied

Follow-up investigations revealed that Manoel Pereira da Cruz and Miguel José Viana, according to their families, were taking a business trip. But instead, it seemd that they told some fibs because  they ended up dead on the mountain after catching a bus to Niterói. Along the way, they bought the coats and bottled water.

Initially thought to be a true crime, witnesses claimed the duo looked nervous and looked at their watches as if they had a serious appointment. Perhaps they did. However, it certainly seems like a very mysterious one.

The Strange Note & Cause Of Death

Now here’s a much more mysterious puzzle. Why on earth did a note written in one of the men’s books say this:

16:30 be at the specified location. 18:30 ingest capsules, after effect protect metals await signal mask.

Plus, even more mysteriously, why didn’t the coroner’s office immediately do autopsies to find out if they took any toxic capsules? Well, they did, but way too late to establish any toxicology. Plus, the capsules never were found. Perhaps the duo simply washed them down with a water chaser. Anyway, nobody was ever able to establish the cause of death.

UFO Phenomena?

Here’s where it gets weirder. Back in the day, folks were less likely to talk about UFO phenomena. However, Watch Mojo confirmed that some witnesses claimed they spotted some strange orange lights. Apparently, they hovered around the place and moved over Vintém Hill on the night the men died.

Not unnaturally, that leads folks to suspect some extraterrestrial connection. However, others believed that the duo simply got tied up in a cult that focused on being “scientific spiritualists.” If they believed they could contact other dimensions or even aliens, then that might explain the lead masks.

Unless you ever crossed over dimensions or chatted with an alien in a UFO, you might not have thought to carry lead masks around to protect your eyes from a bright light.

A Possible Murder Motive?

While intriguing, the mystery might lie closer to home. Further investigations suggested that the two men had a lot of money with them. “Had” being the operative word here, as it wasn’t with them when they were discovered. And unless the boy took it, which seems doubtful after spotting dead men, then maybe some sort of crime took place.

Interestingly, the note didn’t match the handwriting of either man. So it seems pretty darn clear that a third party human might have been involved. Unless, of course, aliens are fluent in local lingos.

Nearly sixty years later, the men on Vintém Hill keep their secret. Taking into account the lead masks, the cryptic note, and the complete lack of answers, it might be one of the most enduring mystery stories ever.
