The Young and the Restless spoilers document that Phyllis Summers (Michelle Stafford) is presenting one face to Cane Ashby (Billy Flynn), Billy Abbott (Jason Thompson), and the world. But her history and recent kidnapping imply that her true intentions are different than what she’s saying.
Cane openly stated that he’s going to continue testing her loyalty. The current challenge involves her hacking skills, where she’s being asked to obtain corporate information illegally.
There’s no paperwork trail in the loose arrangement Phyllis has with Cane. So, she stands to suffer the consequences of whatever negative outcomes result. That makes devoted fans wonder if Phyllis is acting with a purpose and plans to help her loved ones while setting up Cane.
After years of working with his father, Cane removed his Aristotle Dumas mask and made himself known. That, in and of itself, was logical because he did so as part of an effort to reclaim love with Lily Winters (Christel Khalil).
Let’s address the Billy factor first by including Jill Abbott (Jess Walton) in the calculation. Cane bonded with Jill when telling her that her ex-husband, Colin Atkinson (Tristan Rogers), was dying. That makes it plausibly possible that Cane is trying to help Billy when Arabesque presumably rules Genoa City, Wisconsin, shortly.
However, asking Phyllis, whom Cane knows, is more unpredictable than asking Billy. So, it could be that Cane is asking Phyllis to hack as a means to an end. He might be using her to distract his intended takeover targets, whether she remains silent about doing so or not.
Phyllis was married to and loved Nick Newman (Joshua Morrow) and Jack Abbott (Peter Bergman). She’s still fond of them both and wants to protect them.
So, throwing in with Cane to sabotage their family companies doesn’t add up. She can’t possibly believe that either man would go along with her backing Cane’s plan to seize control of Newman Enterprises and Jabot, respectively.
But she would gain their admiration and respect if Phyllis works to undermine Cane and thwart his efforts. That’s a storyline that fans would accept and also result in Flynn’s recast character receiving his comeuppance.
The realization of respect with Sharon Newman (Sharon Case) was a watershed moment on this great soap. True enemies, whose fight originated with Nick’s marital betrayal of Sharon nearly two decades ago, arrived at more than a true earlier this year.
The scenario where they were kidnapped and forced to work together to survive generated a lasting respect between these characters. The event also caused Phyllis to reevaluate her life.
Stafford’s character can’t possibly be pursuing an agenda that sees her violate the decades-long connections she established since first moving to this famous city. Hopefully, Phyllis is being written as a veiled hero rather than into a bleak position in GC.
