GH’s Maurice Benard Offers Mental Health Update For AMC Alum Lee Meriwether, During Podcast

During his YouTube podcast, State of Mind, General Hospital’s (GH) Maurice Benard (Sonny Corithos) talks about a variety of mental health issues while interviewing top stars in the land of daytime drama.

During a recent episode that took place in late February, Benard updated fans on an All My Children (AMC) alum.

According to Maurice, he found out from a former guest, Kyle Oldham, that AMC star Lee Meriwether (Ruth Martin) has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. Oldman is the daughter of Meriwether.

Lee Meriwether’s Impact On All My Children

Ms. Meriwether began the role of Ruth Martin on AMC in 1996 and played the role on and off until the show ended on ABC in 2011. She was recast in the part and second to play Martin, taking the part over from actress Mary Fickett when she decided to retire.

Prior to AMC, Lee appeared in the primetime show Barnaby Jones and is also familiar to audiences as Catwoman in the 1966 Batman film. Meriwether also holds the distinction of being crowned Miss America in 1955.

Benard made a promise to his State Of Mind fans that he plans on having Oldham on his podcast, every six months, or so. He notes that the show wants to give the audience a viewpoint as to what Alzheimer’s does to someone.

Benard participated in an Alzheimer’s storyline on GH when his character, Sonny, watched his father Mike Corbin (Max Gail) suffer through the illness, and ultimately, pass away. Maurice won a Daytime Emmy for his performance within this arc in 2021.

GH star Vernee Watson (Stella Henry) was on the State of Mind episode when Benard revealed the Meriwether/Oldham’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis news. Watson was also involved in the Mike Corbin storyline and won a Daytime Emmy for her role in it, as well.
