What Was The Point of Esme’s Amnesia On General Hospital?

General Hospital: Esme's (Avery Kristen Pohl)

General Hospital looked like it was heading toward an Esme Prince redemption arc when the young villainess woke with amnesia and actually seemed like a nice person.

General Hospital Bores Us With Esme’s Amnesiac Year

Esme’s (Avery Kristen Pohl) amnesia started off just fine. Not only could she not remember who she was, she also had to deal with the fact that she was very pregnant and didn’t remember how she didn’t up that way.

She took it at face value that Nikolas Cassadine (Adam Huss) was the father of her child because that was what he told her.

When Esme gave birth on the same Wyndemere floor where she conceived Ace, it was among terror as her two serial killer parents surrounded her.

Ryan Chamberlain (Jon Lindstrom) ended up dead and Heather Webber (Alley Mills) was carted back to jail, leaving Esme to her own devices. Thanks to her own crimes that she couldn’t remember, Esme was sent to Spring Ridge and decided to take her baby with her.

Trina Robinson (Sydney Mikayla) then decided Esme shouldn’t be tried for crimes she didn’t remember because she felt a jury wouldn’t convict, Esme ended up living with Laura Collins (Genie Francis), Kevin Collins, and Spencer Cassadine (Nicholas Alexander Chavez). Laura grew attached to her, got her a job working for Alexis Davis (Nancy Lee Grahn), and decided the girl could do no wrong.

For a while, she didn’t do much wrong except bother Spencer to help her with Ace at the most inopportune moments, which made for a boring Esme indeed.

Esme Gets Her Memory Back, Reverts To Form

We thought we were finally getting somewhere when a year later, Esme’s memories started to return. Maybe she would be a combination of bad Esme and the Esme who showed a bit of growth as an amnesiac single mom. Maybe she’d feel remorse once she remembered all the horrible things she did.

Nope. Esme just became Esme again, feeling everyone wronged her and being hellbent on revenge. She cared more about hurting Spencer and Trina than she did her missing baby and hopped a plane to Paris where she showed she was just as evil as ever.

GH really missed the boat with a character that started out with so much potential and we don’t understand why. A year of amnesia resulted in nothing except bored and frustrated viewers who can’t wait to see Esme’s story finally end.
