General Hospital spoilers and updates tease Elizabeth Baldwin (Rebecca Herbst) will try to reassure Hamilton Finn (Michael Easton) who’s worried about losing his job.
Both Finn and the hospital have been hit with a malpractice lawsuit over a patient of Finn’s who died, sued by the man’s widow.
The malpractice suit states although Finn found a tapeworm, and got rid of it, he failed to find the stage four colon cancer the man died from.
The cancer hadn’t shown up on the colonoscopy that Finn had performed, or on any other tests. However, the patient hadn’t come back for his follow up appointments over a course of several months, and by the time he did, experiencing severe symptoms, it had been too late.
Finn, as an infectious disease specialist had feared the worst for Dennis Muldoon (uncast character) when he didn’t return for his follow up appointments-certain types of tapeworms, called “helminths” cause cancer.
Mr. Muldoon’s business had taken him all over the world, including to third world countries and he was too busy to come for his checkups.
Elizabeth reasons with Finn that he can’t blame himself for this situation-without trying to make the patient the bad guy, he didn’t come in for his checkups.
If he had, the cancer would have been caught in a more curable stage and perhaps he’d be alive today; of course, they have to avoid blaming the victim in court.
Finn is worried he’ll lose his job and his career if they can’t win the malpractice suit-not to mention the hospital could be shut down and everyone affected!
It’s not just Finn Mrs. Muldoon is suing, it’s General Hospital as well and Diane Miller (Carolyn Hennesy) will bring up Finn’s past drug addiction-nothing personal, of course.
Elizabeth builds Finn up telling him not to doubt himself, he’s an excellent doctor; even though Brad Cooper (Parry Shen) stole the credit, Finn found the cure for Blackwood’s Syndrome.
He found Tracy Quartermaine’s (Jane Elliot) brain worms and cured them in spite of still struggling with addiction issues when he first came to town.
Elizabeth offers to come with Finn to his appointment with Attorney Martin Gray (Michael E. Knight) for support, and as a witness to Finn’s doctoring abilities.
It’s still early in the game and the actual court hearing related to the malpractice suit may not be for months. Finn thinks it’s best if he not continue working, even though he hasn’t been suspended yet-Elizabeth disagrees, that would just make him look guilty.
