Thomas was not in his right mind after returning from New York with his son. He used Douglas Forrester (Henry Joseph Samiri) as a lure.

Hope bonded with Douglas and came to care for him. Thomas’ intention, of Hope becoming Douglas’ adoptive mother, was later realized.

Ongoing instances of Thomas undermining Hope’s marriage to Liam never led to her cutting Atkinson’s character off. That implied a deeper connection than their mutual concern for Douglas.

Today, Hope is the pursuer. She has not openly committed to Thomas, who believes she will fall in love with him.

Brooke fears Thomas reverting to form and turning on Hope if the romantic relationship she has with him does not develop into marriage.
