Royal Family News: Prince Philip’s Children Pay Tribute To His Keen Sense Of Humour

British royal family news reveals that on Friday 99-year old Prince Philip passed away at Windsor Castle with his wife Queen Elizabeth at his side. They had been married for 73 years and her loss is being felt throughout his family.

Two of his children are now sharing fond reminiscences of their father. Princess Anne told ITV News’ royal editor Chris Ship about how her father always kept up with the times.

Royal Family News: Prince Philip Passed Away

According to her, Philip was, “able to keep pace with the kind of technological changes that have such an impact,” on the world even at his advanced age.

She also spoke to his decision to give up a promising Naval career in 1951 so that he could support the Queen upon her ascension to the throne.

The duke joined the Royal Navy in 1939 when he was still a teenager but by 1942, he had attained the rank of First Lieutenant after bravely fighting in the Battle of Crete and the conflict at Cape Matapan. His collection of medals was astounding and he proudly displayed these at appropriate events.

Royal Family News: Prince Philip’s Children Remember Him

Princess Anne believes her father’s legacy is in the Duke of Edinburgh Award he founded in 1956. It is an award for young people which has been given out in over 140 countries, including beyond the Commonwealth.

His son Prince Edward agreed that the spread of the Duke of Edinburgh Award around the world was an “enormous testament to that original vision.” And like his sister he remembers how Philip and the Queen had been a “fantastic support” for each other.

Edward told ITV News, “For what he has done in his public life for all the organizations he has supported and influenced and obviously as my father and husband to my mother and all the work that he has done there and as a family, we will remember that more than anything else.”

Royal Family News: Prince Philip Has Left Behind A Lasting Legacy

Anne said in a pre-recorded interview, “Without him, life will be completely different. But I think also from society’s perspective he’s been able to keep pace with the kind of technological changes which have had such an impact… but at the bottom of all that it’s not about the technology it’s about the people.”

She also noted that he was the world’s longest-serving Prince Consort saying, “It must have evolved quite dramatically from the early stages. I don’t think the structure in terms of support to the monarchy was designed to deal with a consort.”

“Nobody had thought about what he was going to do. And it took a while to find people who understood he had extraordinary experience and skills that they could make use of. But he also found ways he could make an impact.”
