Ancient Japanese Garden Turned Into Digital Living Art Collective

Digital art collective teamLab has transformed Kairakuen Garden in Mito, Japan into a psychedelic kaleidoscopic open-art art exhibition.

The digital art collective known as teamLab has done wonders with many locations in the world. They transform existing beautiful places into kaleidoscopic, interactive open-air art exhibits. Their latest project is the Kairakuen Garden in Mito, Ibaraki Prefecture in Japan.

Ancient Japanese Garden Turns Into Living Art

teamLab has unveiled its latest, an incredible new exhibition, where they have transformed Kairakuen Garden in Mito, Ibaraki Prefecture into a psychedelic, kaleidoscopic open-air art exhibit. The interactive display features 3,000 plum blossom trees that the collective has transformed into living artwork, using ground-breaking, new technology.

The exhibition is set to run from February 13 to March 21, 2021, as part of teamLab’s growing Digitized Nature Project. The display is interactive, as it responds to the presence of visitors and it is being held along with the 120-year-old Mitu Ume (plum) festival in Japan. The collective’s concept is to turn nature into art, using non-material digital technology, without harming it.

The beautiful and dreamy experience includes vibrant digital projects cast onto the trees, landscapes, and rocks of the garden. As visitors move around the exhibit, it morphs and moves in response. Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the outdoor setting is ideal, keeping the visit in line with safety protocols.

TeamLab Speak About The Exhibition

Speaking of their remarkable exhibition, teamLab explained, “Humans cannot recognize time longer than their own life spans. In other words, there is a boundary in our understanding of the long continuity of time.”

“The forms and shapes of nature have been created over many years and have been molded by the interactions between people and nature. We can perceive this long duration of time in these shapes of nature themselves. By using the shapes, we believe we can explore the boundary in our perception of the long continuity of time.”

About Kairakuen Garden

The Kairakuen Garden was created following the Edo Period (1842) in Japan. The garden centers around a pond and has been designated as a Special Place of Scenic Beauty.

The garden is considered to be one of the Three Great Gardens of Japan, along with the Korakuen Garden in Okayama and Kenrokuen Garden in Kanazawa. The garden hosts 3,000 plum trees of 100 different varieties and is renowned for its plum blossoms. Thanks to the diverse collection of varieties, the trees collectively bloom over a longer period of time than the norm.

Visiting Japan is a unique experience for any international traveler, with its unique culture and delicious cuisine. Experiencing one of the Three Great Gardens of Japan is considered to be a remarkable experience. However, viewing the Kairakuen Garden, enhanced by the Digital Art Collective is a truly unique experience. Photographers and videographers can capture amazing beauty, as the scene changes as visitors move around the space.
