Disney Films Dominated the Box Office in 2019, But What About 2020?

The Walt Disney Company had a great year. But the company won’t have as great a 2020 though. It’s no secret that the studio is quickly taking over the entertainment industry. Disney now owns some of Fox’s movies, including Marvel and Star Wars. However, there are no Avengers or Star Wars lined up for the coming new year. There are only two Marvel movies: A Black Widow prequel starring Scarlett Johansson and Eternals with Angelina Jolie and Kit Harrington.

The Walt Disney Company Had A Great Year

There are also three live-action movies in the works, Mulan, Onward, and Soul. In addition, there’s also the Jungle Cruise starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Emily Blunt. However, Disney’s 2020 lineup could signify “a more subdued year at the box office,” according to the chief analyst of Boxoffice.com, ShawnRobbins, in an interview with CNN Business.

“Disney has a 2020 slate that most studios would kill to have, but by their own recent standards, next year is missing a big event film that everyone has to see,” Robbins said. “Sure, they have two Marvel movies and a few others that could be sneaky big hits, but there’s no epic conclusion like ‘Avengers: Endgame’ or even a Star Wars movie.”

This means that 2019 could be hard to beat. This has been a historic year for Disney. It earned $71 billion for its acquisition of 21st Century Fox. Back in July, Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge became the highest-grossing movie in box office history. It’s also become the company’s biggest expansion, thanks to its new Star Wars Land which has made its debut at Disneyland and Walt Disney World. And Disney+, its new streaming service, also helped the company rake in some money.

Next Year, Disney Is More Focused On Correcting What It Achieved In 2019

Next year, Disney is more focused on correcting what it achieved in 2019, according to Trip Miller, a Disney shareholder, and managing partner at hedge fund Gullane Capital Partners. Its streaming service had a successful first day with 10 million sign-ups. Bog Iger said that the streaming platform has become his “highest priority.”  Disney+ will prove to be the one thing that repositioned the company on several media fronts,” Miller said. “It will connect the company to the next generation of storytelling.”
