Teething Twin Nightmares – My Twins Had 5 teeth each by 10 months!

The t-word is enough to send shivers down most parents’ spines. When your babies get their first teeth, it can go one of two ways; either you hardly notice it at all or it’s a living nightmare. For me, it was the latter.

You probably know that babies can get their first teeth at any age between three and seven months old. Well, my little twins were what’s known as ‘early bloomers’. They started to teeth when they were just four months of age, which was… well, unexpected.

When both of the twins were 10 months old they each had five teeth and counting. Needless to say, it was something of a tricky trail. The last six months was a struggle, to say the least. Here’s my story:

How it all started

The first sign that I noticed was that Ella was a bit ‘off’. She seemed to be in pain but obviously, couldn’t express that. Her appetite dropped a little too, which I now know is quite common with teething babies. Of course, at the time, I was a little worried. The idea of my baby not eating and acting odd was enough to stop me sleeping! Poor girl.

It wasn’t long before I found out what was up. A few weeks later, Rose had started to act just the same and it was pretty clear that teething was the cause. Sadly, I could tell that these two were going to have a painful, annoying teething process.

Sleepless nights

One of the worst things about teething babies is that they find it hard to sleep. While the two of them had slept through the nights before now, they suddenly became very fussy at bedtime. I’d hear them crying on the monitor at least five times each night. Needless to say, I wasn’t getting all that much sleep myself either. Nightmare! I think I was walking around like a zombie all the time while all this was going on.

Bite, bite, bite!

It wasn’t all that much easier when the kids were awake either! It might sound kind of strange, but all they wanted to do was bite on everything they saw. Rose, in particular, was obsessed with chomping on her stuffed animals. At first, this stressed me out a little. I mean, kids shouldn’t bite things, right? Well, wrong… I later found out that this behavior is really very normal and, yes, there are a few things that you can do about it.

Here are the helpful tips I’ve learned

Once my little ones were 10 months old, I had gotten used to the whole teething thing. Yes, it still shocked me to see that they already had five teeth each, but that’s about it! Luckily, I learned some tips along the way that I’d like to share with you! Here’s my advice:

  • Get pacifiers – If your babies are going to chew on anything, it needs to be safe. Make sure that you buy a pacifier for each of them so that they can chomp away safely.
  • Be supportive – Teething is anything but easy. Don’t lose your patience with your little ones. Instead, be there to give them love and cuddles when they need it most!
  • Look at teething gels – Now, I didn’t actually use these, but I’ve heard from other moms that they can work wonders. They might just be worth a look!
  • Painkillers – If your babies are really suffering, it might be worth looking at child-friendly painkillers. (Of course, this is only for very extreme circumstances!) Talk to your babies’ doctor before choosing the right medication for them.
