Kids At Weddings Dos & Don’ts

I love going to weddings more than anything else! Watching two of my friends say those two special words in front of everyone is just fabulous. There’s just one little thing I worry about… My kids! Of course, I want them to be a part of the ceremony too, but how can I make sure that they don’t steal the spotlight from the bride and groom?

If you’ve just been invited to a wedding and you have little ones, I have a little advice for you. The last thing you want is to ruin anyone’s big day. Here are some wedding dos and don’ts that are certain to help you along the way.

Don’t assume your kids are invited

Sometimes, the wedding invitations may not make it 100% clear whether your kids are invited. You simply can’t turn up to a wedding with your kids when it’s meant to be ‘adults only’. That’s why you have to chat to the bride or groom first. Find out just what they have in mind. If no other children are attending, it may be best just to get a sitter.

Do check the menu out

Once you know whether you can take your kids, you need to find out what’s on the menu. My kids are terribly fussy and so I always need to make sure that there is something for them there. If the kids’ menu is too fancy for your little ones, take some healthy snacks in your bag. Having a few carrot sticks for them to eat will stave off hunger and make sure that they don’t start to complain.

Don’t let your kids get bored

You might find weddings utterly exciting, but your kids probably won’t feel the same way! You need to make sure that you have some way to entertain them. Taking a book or a few toys (if your kids are little!) may make all the difference. You should chat to the bride or groom as well. Perhaps they have something in mind for the younger guests.

Do set some ground rules

Before you head off to the event, make sure that you speak to your kids! You need to let them know what’s okay and what’s not here. That means setting a few ground rules before you do anything else. If you’ve explained how they should behave, they will have no excuses when they start to play up.

Don’t forget a spare change of clothes

This is a rule for both you and your kids. Children can be mucky pups at the best of times. Mine are always spilling things down them and getting their clothes messy. It can be something of a nightmare. If your little ones ruin what they are wearing, they will look a total mess for the rest of the event. You just cannot let that happen! Instead, you need to make sure that both you and they have a spare change of clothes… in case the worst should happen.

Do be a parent first and a guest second

Finally, this is one of the most important things you need to remember. You are a parent first and a guest second. Your primary goal here is to make sure that your children behave themselves! Don’t ignore them while you party the night away. Make sure that you are attentive and caring even when they are naughty. Trust me, this is the best way to make sure that they are as good as gold.
