How to Breastfeed Twins – 5 Tips to Success

Breastfeeding two tiny babies may seem a bit overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. Once you get the hang of it, breastfeeding twins can be a very fun and rewarding experience. It’s a great way for mom to bond with her babies!

Below are five tips that will lead to successful breastfeeding experiences with your two little ones!

– Understand that each of your babies is different.

Though they may look the same, and have the same birthday, twins have different needs and developmental rates. While one baby may latch on quickly, the other may have difficult and need the help of a lactation consultant. Treat your babies as individuals when it comes to their feeding needs so that both can thrive.

– Create 2-3 nursing locations in your home.

With two new babies in the home, you will want feeding times to be convenient. Nursing “stations” throughout the house can cut down on breastfeeding time as well as make things easier for you.

In each station, have pillows, burp cloths, extra clothing, blankets, and even a few diapers. If you are still feeding one baby at a time, choose a safe nursing location so his brother or sister can lay on a blanket while you finish nursing.

– Don’t rush tandem nursing.

When breastfeeding twins, tandem nursing – placing a baby on each breast at the same time – can make things much easier for everyone. However, this needs to come later when both babies have become skilled in latching and nursing.

Some twins may not be ready for tandem until they are 6-8 weeks old. Just make sure both are properly latching on and getting enough to eat.

– Learn the best positions for tandem nursing.

Once you are ready to nurse your twins at the same time, you may want to try multiple positions during breastfeeding until you get the best you and the babies. The football hold for each usually works well. Use pillows or rolled up towels to help support your babies against your chest during the feedings.

– Nourish your milk supply.

Your milk supply is important whether you are feeding one or two babies. The best way to increase your amount is to continue nursing. If you need assistance between feedings, you can always pump. Also, be sure you are eating healthy and getting enough rest so your body can continue making enough milk for your little ones.

Breastfeeding twins may seem harder than a single baby, but it’s all about learning to work with your babies and making sure they are well fed. After a while, it will not feel so overwhelming, and the three of you will enjoy the closeness!
