Fans Hate ‘General Hospital’ Steve Burton’s New Look, But There’s A Reason For It
Steve Burton’s return to ‘General Hospital’ on July 13 had fans reeling over his character Jason Morgan’s new haggard appearance.
Morgan has been missing from the show for a while, and the last time we saw him, he was an impassive but handsome man. Gone are those days.
Needless to say, his new reality did not exactly sit well with fans, so Burton has decided to explain the real purpose of the transformation.
Steve Burton Reacts To Negative Fan Talk Over His ‘GH’ Character’s Appearance
Burton addressed the issue during a recent episode of ‘That’s Awesome,’ which the star co-hosts with friend Bradford Anderson (Spinelli).
Chatting on the latest episode, Burton noted that the reaction to his character’s return on ‘GH’ has been veering more towards negative chatter based on his character’s appearance alone.
“So glad you’re back, but… then all the negative starts,” Burton said, adding that fans would go on to wonder things like, “What’s wrong with his hair?” and “What happened to his face?”
“Someone literally said, ‘He took time off to get work done and to elongate his forehead,’” Burton recalled the fan comment, promptly bursting into wild laughter at the ridiculousness of the idea. “I said, ‘Who wants a five-head?’ We have a forehead. Like, who would want to make their forehead taller?”
After adding that some of the reactions around his character’s appearance revolved around his massive weight loss, he explained that every little change fans were nitpicking about was a “conscious decision.”
His character spent months in a WSB prison overseas in Jakarta before recently returning to Port Charles, and Burton thought that his appearance should reflect that.
“I’m like, ‘Okay, well, if I’m in jail, I should probably start slimming down,’” he said. “I’m gonna just kind of tighten things up, get a little leaner, just so I look a little more emaciated and then makeup can do what they do.
And then maybe people will go, ‘Yeah, he was somewhere for like, three months not really eating and got beat up and a lot of bad stuff happened to him.’”
He reminded fans that his character’s return to Port Charles was so swift he didn’t have time to truly recover from the effects that his time in prison have had on his body. “Makeup did a wonderful job,” Burton gushed. “This is why hair and makeup were nominated for an Emmy [this year].”

On the podcast, Burton would then go on to clarify that the physical transformation we see onscreen was done to fit his character’s story. It in no way reflects the life he’s been living.
“The hair change was intentional,” he said. “The weight loss was intentional. The makeup was intentional. It was all intentional, because I think I look pretty good right now!”
