General Hospital Josh Swickard Gets Candid About Faith & Mental Health With Co-Star Maurice Benard

General Hospital’s Josh Swickard (Harrison Chase) recently appeared on co-star Maurice Benard’s (Sonny Corinthos) YouTube podcast, a State of Mind. The show focuses on mental health issues, and Swickard got very candid about his struggles and how his faith has helped him.

Josh Swickard Talks Panic Attacks

Swickard admitted suffering from anxiety and panic attacks, noting that he discovered the ‘Wim Hof’ breathing technique after the COVID pandemic. The “quick breaths followed by a breath hold” was a game-changer for Swickard, which helped him discover how his body responds when stress hits.

Swickard’s Faith

The actor then talked about his faith, God, and being a dad. He noted, “I want my kids to know they are loved. I want them to be happy, whole people, before the first love, the marriage. I want them to love Jesus. He has been an integral part of my life.”

This is when Benard shared a personal moment that he had while hospitalized due to a mental health crisis. Benard stated, “When I was in the mental hospital, tied to a bed, I made a cross from breaking a latch and putting it beside my bed.”

He went on to say, “Even then, as horrible as it was, I knew there was a reason why He was making me go through this.” Benard added, “

I think He wants me to suffer, so that others don’t have to.” 

Swickard also admitted how hard it can be to hear what comes from God and what comes from the world around him. He relayed that his prayer to God is to help him use his pain and not waste it.

The full episode is currently on YouTube, and General Hospital fans can also anticipate a “part II” with Swickard and Benard, as the next State of Mind is released on Sunday, February 8. Still, this time around, in addition to Swickard, his grandfather, Arthur, will also be part of the discussion.
