Days of Our Lives spoilers and updates reveal some fans are wondering if Marlena Evans (Deidre Hall) will ever love again, after losing John Black (Drake Hogestyn). Here’s what Deidre says in an interview with Woman’s World.
As Dr. Marlena Evans discovers if she has Lyme Disease on Days of Our Lives, Deidre Hall looks back on nearly 50 years filled with love, laughter, heartbreak, and adventure in Salem.
From the glamorous DOOL 60th Anniversary red carpet, the soap opera star, who was part of the cherished daytime super couple “Jarlena,” speaks to Woman’s World about Marlena’s journey after losing John Black. In this interview, Hall opens up about what being a widow means for her character and the viewers of Days of Our Lives.
Plus, she discusses if there’s a chance for romance now that Marlena and John’s love story has concluded. You may be surprised at what she has to say.
Deidre Also Talks About What Motivates Her To Stay In The Soap Opera Industry
Additionally, the 78-year-old actress shares what has motivated her to stay in the soap opera industry for so long and when she might consider retiring.
After joining Days of Our Lives in 1976 following her time on The Young and the Restless, Deidre Hall has portrayed nearly every soap opera storyline imaginable.
And of course, not to mention Marlena’s possession by the devil-however, after five decades, the icon is now exploring entirely new ground. While Marlena has mourned her loves before, including John Black, and has even “died” a few times, this time her grief feels real and profound. The love of her life will not return.
“Marlena and Julie both lost their husbands around the same time, and Bill Hayes and Drake Hogestyn were key figures on the show,” Hall explains, noting that many viewers can identify with this. “In our country, many women have lost their partners, as we tend to outlive men; this is a significant social issue.” “My sister lost her husband a few years back,” she adds. “
Seeing her cope with that and figuring out who she is now without him around and not cooking for two . . . It’s a tough situation to face. Susan Hayes and I are portraying this in our scenes- I’m really thankful that the show is expressing, ‘We’re still here, we still matter, and we still care about life and love.’”
Yes, you heard correctly; Hall is discussing love, and she means more than just family love. “I believe Marlena will find love again,” she states, but she won’t speculate on what type of man her character might be interested in after John Black. “That decision is up to casting and our writers-they are excellent at this.
They also understand that it’s a significant challenge to find someone for Marlena-John and Marlena are legendary,” she continues. “Iconic! So there must be magic. There must be undeniable chemistry.”
Additionally, more time is needed. With John passing away a hero after rescuing Peter Reckell’s Bo Brady last June, Dr. Evans is still dealing with her grief and what it means to be a widow. “We were aware we would be losing Drake early on, and it was going to be tough,” Hall reflects. “So the writers had time to consider how to handle that, and we were able to say goodbye to him on screen, which was very special.” “Since then, I’ve been keeping busy with many scenes alongside Martha Madison, who portrays Belle Brady, and focusing on my work and the hospital . . . and just missing John,” she adds.
Having collaborated with Hogestyn since his arrival in the mid-’80s and having navigated the dramatic Roman love triangle and identity struggles, Hall expresses her desire to understand the essence of their chemistry. “We had a personal affection for one another, and I held him in high regard both personally and professionally,” she shares. “He was my anchor, and I hope I provided the same for him.”
“It was simply there,” she adds. “It existed in the script, and when we stepped onto the stage, we just expressed our love for each other in front of the cameras, and the audience craved that.”
Equally incredible was diving into the chaotic world of evil twins and doppelgängers alongside her real-life twin, Andrea Hall-Gengler. “Collaborating with my sister was an absolute blast,” Hall shares enthusiastically. “She took on the role of Samantha, and then she transformed into Hattie Adams, who was utterly wild.
Andrea transitioned into acting from a background in special education, which meant she had no limitations on her creativity.
She could simply adjust her bra, lower her panties, or do whatever she felt like, and it was all perfectly acceptable; her performance was completely free-spirited, and the audience adored her.”
Deidre Talks About Taking Over The Role Of Hattie, And Having Fun With Her Costars
“Then I had the chance to portray Hattie, and I felt like the luckiest girl in the world,” she continues with a smile. “I also had the privilege of working alongside Judi Evans when she played Bonnie Lockhart, and our drunken musical numbers were just out of this world! And then there was when Kayla Johnson (Mary Beth Evans), Marlena, and Kate Brady (Lauren Koslow) found themselves kidnapped in 2022.
The three of us were just in stitches, laughing and having an absolute blast. It was a time I never wanted to end!
After entering the industry in 1970, Hall became well-known for her role in the quirky 1976 superhero series Electra Woman and Dyna Girl. This was followed by two seasons on the 1980s drama Our House.
She has also appeared in popular shows like Columbo, Hotel, and Drop Dead Diva, along with The Tonight Show, Night of A Hundred Stars, and a special featuring Bob Hope
. In 1995, she opened up about her challenges in becoming a mother in the TV movie Never Say Never: The Deidre Hall Story.
While working on The Young and the Restless in the early 1970s, the young actress developed a passion for soap operas. “It was a minor role, but I loved the family vibe,” she shares; “I told my agent, ‘I love this! Get me on a soap
. I want to raise my own family, so I need a dressing room where I can bring my kids, have my friends, and know everyone.'”
“I got exactly what I wished for in the best way possible!” she exclaims. “I raised my kids on the Days of Our Lives sets, and returning to the same place, the same dressing room, the same people… it’s rejuvenating.
Marlena feels guilty about her role in the Rachel Black (Alice Halsey) cover-up, leaving her future as a Days of Our Lives widow uncertain. Fortunately, Hall assures Woman’s World that she plans to discover what lies ahead-and has no plans to retire! “You’ll have to drag me out of there,” Hall says with a smile; “While I love what I do, it’s also about the wonderful people I work with. It’s a great team, from executive producer Ken Corday to our hair, makeup, and wardrobe teams-he’s a family man, and it’s a family business; It’s truly the best way to work.”
