The Young and the Restless spoilers document that Cane Ashby (Billy Flynn) offered a heartfelt admission that offers an opportunity. He told the woman he thinks of as a mother, Jill Abbott (Jess Walton), that he feels lost.
Jill came to Genoa City, Wisconsin, to help her genetic son, who is also veering far off-course. But she also returned home because she knew Cane needed help as well.
Cane’s grandiose plan to use an insidious artificial intelligence program has everyone on high alert. The fact that he’s allowed the details of his plan to be revealed implies that Cane either is playing a deeper game or he is subconsciously trying to stop himself.
Flashback scenes showed Cane and his father, who was battling a terminal illness, discussing their plans, life, and Jill. Colin Atkinson (played by the late, great Tristan Rogers) offered an effusive comment about Jill, who is only learning now how he acquired the wealth that was passed along to Cane.
Cane has linked his father’s hopes to Arabesque, which he formed using the bounty and property Colin acquired from a dying woman in France. However, it’s not clear if Colin encouraged his son to play dirty and take down the legacy companies in Genoa City, Wisconsin.
There’s no doubt that Cane’s inability to reconcile with Lily Winters (Christel Khalil) is driving his business aims. He did tell his ex-wife that he would drop his hostile takeover plans if she gave him another chance, which she hasn’t yet accepted.
Cane doesn’t appear to have animus in his heart where Victor Newman (Eric Braeden) and Jack Abbott (Peter Bergman) are concerned. But he might seize their companies if this AI program is all that he claims it to be.
Lily still cares for Cane, but she rightfully doesn’t trust him. So, he’ll need to make a grand, provable, sustained gesture that convinces her he’s sincere.
Being alienated from the twins has devastated Cane. Yet, he believes they’ll come around in time. That’s all he can tell himself at this point in the plot, and his hopes have been modestly lifted by having access to Lily and ongoing conversations with her.
Jill created many storms through the years. But this time, she’s being asked to help calm the soapy waters.
She doesn’t want to see Cane destroy himself. Instead, she can help him achieve a redemptive comeback.
Walton’s character can also help Cane to restore his family, which is infinitely more important than business. It’s fair to assume that Jill will get through to him on some level.
While Cane is likely to keep his options open, he knows that taking control of Newman Enterprises, Jabot, potentially Winters Incorporated, and other businesses, through illegal practices, would cut Lily off cold. Jill is someone who can speak to his heart and hopefully warm it.
