Chase Childers, Dad of 3, Dies During Heroic Rescue

Anderson Chase Childers, who previously played baseball in the Baltimore Orioles system and later became a police officer, died after his heroic efforts to save swimmers at Pawleys Island, South Carolina, this past weekend.

A Tragic Death

Count On News 2, part of NBC, reported that he wasn’t the only person who helped to rescue folks who were caught in a rip current. Unfortunately, his family was with him on a summer vacation when he, too, was caught in the rip tide. Sadly, he lost his life despite helping others survive the scary incident.

The hero of the day lost his life, but there is some small comfort knowing that he died helping others. Citing the Chief of Police Michael Fanning, the outlet wrote: “His first responder instincts kicked in and he went to the water to save people.”

Five other people were rescued, and another helper also made it back to shore. But horrifically for the family, Chase Childers didn’t make it back. Later, after a long search, his body was recovered.

Shocked People React 

When @pawleysislandPD share the news on X, formerly Twitter, plenty of people responded in the comments section. The post had noted that the incident went down near “Shell Rd Ocean.” It also confirmed that the former baseball player was the only fatality that day.

In response to the sad news, one tweeter wrote, “Always so sad to see praying for them and all those who responded.”

Waves continuously push water toward the shore. This water needs to find a way back out to sea. When it finds a path of least resistance—often a break in a sandbar, a gap between rock formations, or near a pier or jetty—the water rushes back out in a concentrated stream. That’s your riptide.

Unfortunately, despite its popularity as a vacation destination, there are no lifeguards on Pawleys Island.
