General Hospital spoilers and updates reveal Port Charles’ Sonny Corinthos, Maurice Benard recently shared his most memorable and favorite storyline. The storyline was so emotional it brought the popular actor to tears as he shared it, as it did many viewers.
After a flood of emotions, Maurice Benard shared the one storyline that profoundly impacted him throughout his extensive portrayal of Sonny. For over thirty years on GH, he has embodied the complex character of Sonny Corinthos, navigating tumultuous mob conflicts, fierce custody disputes, and safeguarding the town of Port Charles.
His journey has been relentless, with even a bout of amnesia thrown into the mix. Amid all these gripping narratives, Benard recently disclosed the single story that touched him deeply, resonating with him on a level that transcended the screen.
Benard posted a clip from his YouTube show State of Mind on Instagram, mentioning, “People often ask me about my favorite storyline. I’ve had many, but I’d say the Alzheimer’s storyline stands out; the writing was incredible, it felt like we weren’t acting; we were living the story.
I want to thank @entinifrank3c12 for creating it, @1steveburton for his constant support, @welcometolaurasworld for her amazing acting help, and everyone at @generalhospitalabc who helps me when I feel overwhelmed. In the video, Benard shared that the pandemic was “Probably the hardest 4 months of my life,” admitting he was in “bad shape.” When he returned to work, he had to dive into the storyline where Sonny’s father, Mike Corbin (Max Gail), had Alzheimer’s.
“And then my dad dies,” he corrected himself, saying, “My character…my father on the show dies.” Benard started to get emotional, complimenting the story with, “It was so beautifully written,” and expressed his gratitude to executive producer Frank Valentini and the GH writers. As he held back tears, he shared, “On my first day, I had these monologues about my dad dying in bed,” adding, “I wasn’t in a good place.”
He talked himself through it, saying, “I told myself, Maurice, don’t act, just live it. So I didn’t force anything. I just said it, and from that…” The beloved actor got choked up but continued, “From that, it just flowed;” he also praised Gail’s amazing work along with Steve Burton (Jason Morgan ) and Laura Wright (Carly Spencer).
