The Young and the Restless spoilers document that Jack Abbott’s (Peter Bergman) concern for his one-time wife is genuine. Hearing that she nearly was shot by the presumed dead Ian Ward (Ray Wise) sparked a visit to the new Ranch house.
Jack’s history with Nikki Newman (Melody Thomas Scott) is intertwined with the enemy status he and Victor share. They fought for her heart in years past, with Victor eventually defeating Jack’s attempts to replace him.
However, these days Nikki considers Jack a dear friend, with romantic thoughts long since past. Victor doesn’t hesitate to remind his nemesis of that plot point.
Victor treated Nikki like a dog in past years. He was cheating on her with Jack’s sister, Ashley Abbott (Eileen Davidson), during the early years of his marriage to Nikki and while she was home with their young family.
Ashley’s connection to Victor sickened Jack and was one of the major sparks that led to their decades-long battle. That fight has been renewed within the last year, with Victor intending to go after Jabot. He also scored a recent knockout against Billy Abbott (Jason Thompson) when reacquiring Chancellor from Jill Abbott (Jess Walton).
The arguably greatest days in Y&R’s history happened during the 1980s and 1990s when Victor’s and Jack’s grudge match was at its height. Those storylines are legendary, so they are often shown in retrospective scenes.
Jack has been preparing for Victor’s assault since he and Diane Jenkins Abbott (Susan Walters) forcibly convinced Kyle Abbott (Michael Mealor) to see the Moustache. Kyle broke from his vendetta and returned to his parents, agreeing to become Jabot’s co-CEO again.
Sure, Jack is grateful that Victor stepped in front of Ian’s bullet and took it. That prevented Nikki from being shot and potentially killed.
However, there is no deal to make with Victor. This momentary lessening of tensions is purely based on the circumstances delivered in the climax to one of the more compelling storylines in recent years.
Victor is the king of Genoa City, Wisconsin. Jack runs second as his eternal foil, and this show is great because of that classic literature-based dynamic.
Ian was never going to kill Victor and, as the audience knows, didn’t die himself. Whether Ian returns in the near future or never darkens GC’s door again is hard to determine.
What’s certain is that the reigning king of this Midwestern city saved his wife and family from perishing. He was one of the great anti-heroes in all of daytime history lives and a real hero in defeating Ian. So, it’s time for Victor to return to trading barbs with Jack and refocus on their epic, persistent strife.
