The Young and the Restless spoilers document that Billy Abbott (Jason Thompson) can withstand whatever Victor Newman (Eric Braeden) does. Phyllis Summers (Michelle Stafford) is positioned as Billy’s right hand or actually his only hand and, incredibly, as the voice of reason.
Devoted fans recall that Billy and Phyllis were once a couple. That duo didn’t exist anytime recently and was during a different but recent era in this soap’s history.
Matching these two particular characters is inspiring. Thompson and Stafford exhibit great chemistry and their characters’ mutual penchant for creative morality trends toward compelling drama dead ahead.
Billy believes that he has the ability to take his newly rebranded company to new heights. That outlook is contingent on him finalizing a deal with an artificial intelligence company.
Lily Winters (Christel Khalil) provided Victor with insider information about Billy’s pending deal. Victor’s awareness of that crucial intel appears to have allowed him to slow if not outright prevent, the agreement from being sealed.
If Billy loses this deal, whether Victor acquires that company or not, Abbott Chancellor is likely done. The Moustache apparently hasn’t obtained the AI company yet, but he sees that as the key to preventing Billy from remaining afloat for long.
It may be a temporary good fit, but for the moment, Billy’s addition of Phyllis to his short bench is a good move. She is a confidant and agrees with everything he thinks and feels about Victor.
Stafford has long ranked as one of the best actors in daytime and beyond. Something striking that should be mentioned is her comedic chops.
The nickname Jack Abbott (Peter Bergman) applied to Phyllis years ago; Red and Stafford’s naturally funny approach offers an arguable comparison to the great Lucille Ball.
Physical comedy is not the comparative point here. Instead, Stafford’s ability to steal scenes with pure dialogue. Her facial expressions are also so stellar that they replace pages of talk with one glance.
Billy is known for screwing up. He put that sign on his back many years ago.
However, the reigning head of AC sees himself as having evolved. Billy’s ego has expanded by many multiples without his mother’s caring hand guiding him.
Phyllis serves as a different form of check on Billy than Jill Abbott’s (Jess Walton) pick, Lily. Phyllis’s approach to life and business is vastly different from Lily’s, and Billy does not enjoy the guardrail effect.
He plans to win at business because his personal life fell apart again. That is not an excellent long-term recipe, but the cake he and Phyllis are making should be enjoyable to watch in its preparation stage. Eating the finished product will probably be a different story.
