This scenic train takes visitors up Pikes Peak in Colorado on the highest and longest cog railroad in the world.
After a three-year renovation period, visitors to Colorado can once again enjoy a scenic train journey up Pikes Peak on the famous Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway. This is the highest and longest cog railroad in the world, as well as the highest railroad in the US and Northern Hemisphere.
The Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway first started operating in June 1891. Since that time, the railway has taken millions of visitors to the 14,115 ft summit of Pikes Peak – also known as America’s Mountain. In fact, it is the highest and longest cog railroad in the world and is finally back on track after three years of renovation work.
Besides the renovation work, new upgrades have been added to the railway, including the addition of new trains, a depot, and new tracks. Another welcome addition is the establishment of the Pikes Peak Visitor Center, with an elevated pathway and overlook with astonishing views. This new visitor center opens in June 2021.
The rail journey to the top of Pikes Peak starts and ends at the Manitou Depot (pictured above) and takes one hour and ten minutes to reach the summit. Visitors then enjoy a 40-minute break on the top of the mountain to enjoy the views. After this, it all aboard again to head back to the depot, which makes a round trip of around three hours.
The incredible views are the major draw for visitors, as the Collegiate and Sangre de Cristo mountain ranges are clearly visible from the top, along with the Continental Divide. Denver can even be seen from the top on a clear day.
Besides the spectacular views, visitors also get to learn about the history and geology of the mountains. They will get to hear the stories of significant people who have shaped the region, as well as historical points.
Along the way, the train enters Pike National Forest and runs within the steep, rocky walls of Englemann Canyon. Passengers on the train will pass stacked boulder formations, a striking waterfall and will head through Deer Park.
The Summit Complex houses permanent indoor and outdoor interpretive exhibits to educate visitors about the history, climate, and geography of the mountain. It also offers recreational opportunities and conservation initiatives. The exhibit gallery includes interactive digital features to bring the mountain to life and allow visitors to form their own personal experiences into the mountain’s story.
Outside the center, interpretive rails around the summit describe the environment and views and identify key landscape features.
All in all, a trip on the Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway is a thoroughly enjoyable and educational journey, backed by some of the most incredible views in the country. Read further information about the railway on the official website.
