Excelsior Pass is a new, digital vaccine pass launched in New York in an effort to restart music, dining, sport, and other events.
The COVID-19 pandemic has just “celebrated” its first anniversary. People everywhere are longing to get back to normal, to visit the theater, go nightclubbing, and more. However, even with the current vaccination program on the go, this stage still seems out of reach. However, there is some good news for those wanting to enjoy a Broadway show or an exciting sports event with crowds of other people.
New York has introduced a new digital vaccine pass in the hope of restarting music concerts, sports, and other events which are currently limited due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The new, digital Excelsior pass is a free, voluntary platform that has been developed in partnership with IBM.
The digital Excelsior Pass confirms an individual’s recent negative PCR or antigen test result or proof of receipt of the full dose of a COVID-19 vaccine. With the pass, it is hoped to speed up the reopening of event venues and businesses in accordance with New York State Department of Health guidelines.
The digital vaccine pass is similar to a mobile airline boarding pass and the holder will be able to store it on their smartphone using the Excelsior Pass Wallet app or print out their pass to hand in at the door. Each will have a secure QR code for participating venues or businesses to scan using a companion app. This will verify proof of vaccination or COVID-19 negative test results.
In the initial launch of the Excelsior Pass, it can be used by participating New Yorkers when enjoying a theater show and entering major stadiums or arenas. The pass can also be used for wedding receptions and catered events held at venues such as the Madison Square Garden or the Times Union Center. From April 2, Excelsior pass will also be expanded to smaller entertainment, arts, and other event venues.
New York Governor Andrew Cuomo recently made the announcement of the introduction of the new digital Excelsior Pass. “The innovative Excelsior Pass is another tool in our new toolbox to fight the virus while allowing more sectors of the economy to reopen safely and keeping personal information secure,” says Cuomo.
“The question of ‘public health or the economy’ has always been a false choice — the answer must be both. As more New Yorkers get vaccinated each day and as key public health metrics continue to regularly reach their lowest rates in months, the first-in-the-nation Excelsior Pass heralds the next step in our thoughtful, science-based reopening,” the Governor added.
The new innovative digital pass travel is certainly welcome at a time when New Yorkers yearn to get back to normal life. It is the first step towards that “new normal” that will no doubt be welcomed by many.
