Pallant House Gallery in the UK will be hosting an exhibition of 80 original miniature artworks in June.
While Pallant House Gallery is currently closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the gallery in North Pallant, Chichester, UK, will be hosting a unique art exhibition in June this year. Dubbed “Masterpieces in Miniature: The 2021 Model Art Gallery,” the exhibition will be housed in a 5-ft display case. On display will be 80 original artworks by famous artists, but all will be in miniature.
Resembling a doll’s house, the 5-ft-long display case will feature new artworks by famous artists, including Damien Hirst, Fiona Rae, Magdalene Odundo, Pablo Bronstein, and Rachel Whiteread. The mini-artworks have been created over the past year, using a variety of mediums, including painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, and ceramics. The “attic” of the model will feature a miniature installation by John Akomfrah.
The new exhibit will feature alongside two other model galleries, namely “The Thirty Four Gallery” and “The Model Art Gallery 2000.” All exhibits will range in size but will be no larger than eight inches.
All three galleries will form a time capsule, exhibiting more than 80 years of British art. The time capsule will include original works by some of the best-known modern artists of the past century. Among the tiny works is a .8-in porcelain pot by Edmund de Waal, a 3.5-in expressive nude by Maggi Hambling, a 5-in Damien Hirst spin painting, a 6-in ghostly blackboard drawing of a ship by Tacita Dean, and a .6-in collage by Lubaina Himid.
All three model art galleries provide a backdrop to view modern art on a doll’s house scale. The galleries will give an insight into the evolution of influences and styles across the decades. They will also highlight how different generations of artists have approached the unique challenge of working in miniature.
With the new works, the Pallant House Gallery hopes to inspire children and young people and to raise interest in contemporary art. It is hoped that the exhibition will later tour other museums and galleries around the UK.
Pallant House Gallery director Simon Martin spoke to the Guardian about the new exhibition. Speaking of the COVID-19 pandemic, he said, “At the height of the first lockdown, artists could not get to their studios, exhibitions were canceled and many people spoke of being creatively blocked.”
“Inspired by the earlier model galleries, I wrote to some of Britain’s leading contemporary artists to ask whether they might participate in a project to create something positive out of the pandemic. Most of the artists usually work on a large scale and were excited by the challenge of condensing their ideas into a miniature artwork and by being part of such a unique history of modern and contemporary British art,” he added.
“Masterpieces in Miniature: The 2021 Model Art Gallery” will be on display at the Pallant House Gallery from June 26 through spring 2022. Visit the gallery’s website to find out more information.
