Madeira, Purtugal Travel – Skip COVID-19 Testing If You Are Vaccinated

Travelers can now visit the beautiful island of Madeira with no COVID-19 testing, as long as they have had the vaccine.

Finally, things are starting to open up for international travelers after a year of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Portuguese island of Madeira is welcoming visitors with open arms, as long as they have had the coronavirus vaccine. Previously, it was necessary to go through COVID-19 testing to visit the island.

Skip COVID-19 Testing On A Visit To Madeira

The Madeira Promotion Bureau has announced that visitors can now head to the island without having to take a COVID-19 test. This is as long as travelers are fully vaccinated and meet the country’s entry requirements. Travelers must prove their status via an official vaccination certificate, including the date of the two doses received and the immunization period for each vaccination. However, anyone who can provide proof of recovery from the virus in the previous 90 days can also visit.

To be able to travel, visitors must submit documentation in English to the Madeirasafe.com app prior to the trip. The Madeira Promotion Bureau describes the latest development as a “vote of confidence in this new phase the world is going through.”

About Madeira

Situated off the northwest coast of Africa, Madeira is an autonomous region of Portugal. The picturesque island has been named Europe’s Leading Island Destination 2020 at the World Travel Awards seven times out of the last eight years.

Known as the “Pearl of the Atlantic,” the island enjoys year-round sunshine. Madeira is popular for its wine tasting and its beautiful botanical gardens. The island is also famous for the exciting toboggan rides in a wicker basket from Monte to Funchal. Its scenic landscapes are also popular for hikers, where they can stroll past gushing streams and towering rock walls, or sun themselves on the black sand beaches.

Speaking of Funchal, this beautiful city has winding lanes to explore and pretty town squares to relax and people watch. However, it also has modern streets with excellent shopping and fascinating museums to visit. The city is also the busiest part of Madeira, with its street cafes and people from outside the city heading to the streets during the day.

Another fascinating part of the city is East Funchal, with its Zona Velha, an old fisherman’s neighborhood that has been transformed. The previously rundown neighborhood is now a hip quarter with art galleries, shops, bars, and restaurants. However, the main attraction here is the Mercado dos Lavradores, the vibrant market of Funchal where almost anything can be purchased.

For Those Not Vaccinated

Anyone who has not yet been vaccinated, but meets Portugal’s entry requirements can still visit. However, they will have to have a negative PCR test, taken within 72 hours before boarding. Should they arrive without a negative test result, they can be tested on arrival at the airport. However, they will then be required to quarantine until they receive the result. Alternatively, they can skip the test, but they must self-isolate for 14 days at their place of accommodation.

Find out more information about the island and entry requirements on the official Visit Madeira website.
