Netflix Bridgerton spoilers and updates tease that Simone Ashley has been cast as Kate Sharma the second season of Netflix’s breakaway hit. The Regency-era period piece is based on Julia Quinn’s romance novels and has broken the streamer’s viewership records. In the first four weeks, it soared to take the top spot among Netflix’s series ratings with 82 million households turning in to see the first season.
Ashley joins an acclaimed cast that includes Nicola Coughlan (Penelope Featherington), Claudia Jessie (Eloise Bridgerton), Ruby Barker (Marina Thompson), Luke Thompson (Benedict Bridgerton), Luke Newton (Colin Bridgerton), Ruby Stokes (Francesca Bridgerton), Will Tilston (Gregory Bridgerton), Florence Hunt (Hyacinth Bridgerton), Ruth Gemmell (Lady Violet Bridgerton), Bessie Carter (Prudence Featherington), Harriet Cains (Phillipa Featherington), Polly Walker (Lady Portia Featherington), Ben Miller (Lord Featherington), Sabrina Bartlett (Siena Rosso), Martins Imhangbe (Will Mondrich), Kathryn Drysdale (“Madame Genevieve Delacroix”) and Lorraine Ashbourne (Mrs. Varley).
Ashley is one of several cast additions for Season 2 of Bridgerton, which will start filming this spring in London.
Ashley is best known for her role as Olivia Hanan on the streamer’s series Sex Education and she was in Neil Cross’s 2020 ITV limited series The Sister as well as Broadchurch.
The second season will center on Anthony Bridgerton and the seeking of a solid mate for him. It is based on the second book of Quinn’s Bridgerton series, The Viscount Who Loved Me.
Kate is described as a brainy, stubborn young woman and Anthony Bridgerton will raise her ire.
According to Deadline, Season 2 of the show continues to break conventions on race. Kate was originally named Sheffield but her last name was changed to Sharma by the show’s creative team. She is of Indian descent continuing the reinvented world of Season 1, which included several major Black characters: the Duke of Hastings (Regé-Jean Page), Lady Danbury (Adjoa Andoh), and Queen Charlotte (Golda Rosheuvel).
In season two Bailey and Ashley will take the front burner away from Page and Phoebe Dynevor. They played Simon and Daphne and their romance was front and center.
Creator and showrunner Chris Van Dusen said, “We have a bunch of new characters we are going to be introducing. Anthony is going to have a love interest next season, and I think it’s going to be as sweeping and moving and as beautiful as viewers of the first season have come to expect from the show.”
“We left him at the end of the first season at a bit of a crossroads, so I’m looking forward to jumping in and discovering how he fares on the marriage market,” Van Dusen said.
