Fun Things To Do With The Kids For St. Patrick’s Day

With such an emphasis on drinking, pub crawls, and street parties it can seem like St. Patrick’s Day isn’t a family-friendly holiday, but that couldn’t be further from the truth! Paddy’s Day is a day for people of all ages and there are a ton of great things you can do with your kids to celebrate the day. Here are a few ways for you to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with your kids.

Turn Your Food Green

Don’t just eat foods that are already green, grab some green food coloring and go wild! Green milk with your breakfast, green biscuits, green mashed potatoes! Go green crazy! This also offers up the opportunity to sneak some greens into their food. If you mash up some peas or finely chop some spinach and throw it in green mashed potatoes, who will ever know besides you? Oh, and skip the corned beef and cabbage…it isn’t even Irish!

Attend a Parade

Just about every town and city in America hosts a St. Patrick’s Day parade. Find out where your local one is and bring the whole family. If you’re looking for some of the best in the country, and let me tell you, we have the best in the world…then you might want to check out this article of the best places to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in the USA. These events usually have something kid-friendly to do at least early on in the day.

Set a Leprechaun Trap

Those leprechauns are tricky little people. They hate being seen, so the only way you will ever see one is by setting a trap! Of course, leprechauns are also magic, so they’ll break free before they’re ever seen but, they will leave behind a small treat because you caught them. This might be a small bag of chocolate gold coins or a little present just because. Make the trap out of an old shoebox that your kids have cleverly decorated and a stick from the yard.

Have a Scavenger Hunt

St. Patrick’s Day is a great day for a scavenger hunt. After all, that leprechaun has to have left some treasure somewhere, right? You can find a ton of scavenger hunts ready-made online or you can customize one for your family. The choice is yours! Be sure to have your camera out while the hunt goes on to catch those precious moments of discovery.

Plant Some Shamrocks

Clover is incredibly easy to grow. So easy in fact that any kid could do it! So buy a few pots, some soil, and seeds. It will take a while for the shamrocks to reach maturity, but in the meantime, you’ll be teaching your kids patience and responsibility in caring for their pot of clovers.

Learn About Ireland

Ireland is a fascinating place. It’s home to one of the oldest buildings in the world, it has an amazingly rich mythology, and it is quite simply gorgeous. If your family has Irish heritage then get specific! Teach your kids about where your family comes from, and why they left. But even if you don’t have any Irish heritage there is a lot you can teach your kids about the emerald isle.
