Books to Teach Caring to Children

One important virtue to teach children from a young age is the ability to care about others. No one wants to raise a child that is selfish and lacks empathy towards others. Besides, setting a good example for your children everyday, you can reinforce the importance of caring through storytelling. Here are my families favorite books that children to care and show empathy towards others. The books listed are for young and older children.

Heartprints by Hallinan P.K.

One of the most effective books of all the books that helped Ava, Ella and Rose was Heartprints by Hallinan P.K. The book is filled with stories that explore the essence of sharing with others as well as teaching kindness. Furthermore, the book help your toddlers understand the impact of being caring and kind.

The Golden Rule by Ilene Cooper

The Golden Rule simply entails stories of the golden rule – “Do unto others as you’d love to be done for.” The book is a story about a grandfather who helps his grandson learn about the rule. Better yet, the rule is recognized in many cultures and religion and the book explores this virtue.

Beryl: A Pig’s Tale by Jane Simons

Ava really loved this book. She used to love to have Daniel or me read this book every evening. The book is about a pig named Beryl that seeks to find a family that will love her for who she is. Beryl faces opposition from domestic pigs that have notions that wild pigs are bad. Luckily, Beryl finds a place where she might call home.

Ordinary Mary’s Extraordinary Deed by Emily Pearson

The book by Emily is a book that sees Mary, an ordinary girl, come across some blueberries that spontaneously led to a good deed chain of reaction. Mary begins to help out various people, even strangers, in her act of kindness and generosity.

When I Care About Others (The Way I feel About Others Books) by Cornelia Maude Spelman

In this simple book for toddlers, the author begins by helping children see that when they are sick, hurt, or unhappy, others care about them. Children can then begin to see that others need to be cared about as well.

Little Critter: Just Critters Who Care (My First I can Read) by Mercer Mayer

As I did as a child, ,my daughter loves the Little Critter series. This book is meant for children who are just learning how to read. So, the text is simple, but still teaches children the importance of helping others.  In the story, Little Critter finds out one of his neighbors is in need, he and his friends rally together and volunteer their help. They soon learn community service is rewarding and fun!
