Naming Twins: Picking The Perfect Baby Name For Your Children

Picking out that perfect baby name is a challenge for many parents. After all, you – and your child – will have to live with the name for the rest of their lives.

If you’re like me, there are a few “go to” questions you think about when naming your baby:

  • Does the name remind you of someone you liked or disliked?
  • Are there any potential nicknames?
  • What do the initials spell?
  • Is the name easy to say and spell?

When you’re having twins, the naming process becomes even more complicated. Sometimes, as new parents to twins, you forget these are two individual people and they each deserve a special name.

While it is tempting to choose rhyming names (and it does sound cute) this is something I would suggest you avoid.

If you are unsure if you have selected great names for your twins, put them to the test:

  • How will the name sound on a resume or when they go to college?
  • What about on the Nobel Prize they are destined to win?

Avoid the cutesy options and choose a name that you and your children will love long after they are out of diapers.

Choose a Theme

Themed twin names provide a subtle connection and can be varied based on ethnicity, place names, spirituality, and religion. Another option is to choose names that have a common meaning or translation from another language.

No-No’s of Naming Twins

A general rule of thumb is to avoid naming your kids the stereotypical twin name pairs – such as Bonnie and Clyde or Luke and Leia. While “Star Wars” is great – you don’t want your twins to have to bear this burden their entire lives.

To help you avoid these all-too-common pairings, check out the Social Security Administrations list of popular twin name pairs. Once you know what they are – avoid them!

Final Twin Name Check

Now is the time for the final, twin name check – open your front (or back) door, yell the two names you have selected in rapid succession – as if they were being called for dinner or if they were in trouble.

Do they sound good? Will you neighbors think you’re crazy when they hear these names in the coming years?

If your names pass this final test, and you feel good about them, you are good to go.

Congratulations! I know when I was naming Ella and Rose I wrestled with the naming process. I am more than happy with the names I chose, and believe they adequately represent the unique personalities of my twin girls.
