10 Books That Should Be on Your Summer Reading List ( And Your Kids)

Summer is a great time to kick back and relax and, frankly, not do much of anything. However, reading shouldn’t feel like a chore and it’s something that you can do alone, your kids can do alone, or you can read together. It seems like reading lists are vastly different every year, but we’ve compiled a list of 10 books that should be on your summer reading list with your children.

Summer Reading List

Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling

I know, I know, this isn’t new, but these books are amazing for children of all ages, and adults. They’re fun, very well written with stories that really grab your attention. Even if you’ve read them already, heck, read them again.

Percy Jackson Series by Rick Riordan

Much like Harry Potter, the Percy Jackson book series is great for all ages, from as young as 7 to as old as 40. They’re slightly mythical and are fun to read, so no one will feel like they’re doing homework.

Holes by Louis Sachar

Coming out many years ago, this book remains a staple to any summer reading list for all ages. It’s a coming of age story unlike anything you’ve ever read before and it’ll be fun for the whole family.

Stella by Starlight by Sharon M. Draper

This book is a poignant tale of a segregated southern town in North Carolina battling the depression as well as the terror of the Ku Klux Klan. Although it deals with heavy topics, the book is geared towards younger children and is a wonderful read appropriate for ages 8 and up.

The Case of the Peculiar Pink Fan: An Enola Holmes Mystery by Nancy Springer

This is like Sherlock Holmes for younger kids. It’s fascinating, a fun read, and one that the whole family will enjoy.

The Worst Class Trip Ever by Dave Barry

This book is hilarious and follows kids while on their trip to the capital. Categorized as adventurous, the entire family will have fun reading it.

Wonderstruck by Brian Selznick

This book is two stories in one, taking place half a century apart. It’s intriguing and a great read.

100 Cupboards by N.D. Wilson

If you and your children are into scarier books then this is right up your alley. These cupboards have more in store than just items, but a whole different world. Take a trip with Henry and experience the unbelievable.

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak

A classic book, this should be on the reading list for everything.  A touching story of Nazi Germany and the struggle for escape through the world of literature.

Wonder by R.J. Ralacio

On the New York Times bestseller list, this book is perfect for all ages and deals with the emotions of empathy, compassion and acceptance, as well as the effects of bullying.

Now, get reading!
