How to Celebrate Halloween With a Baby

Halloween is mainly a tradition for kids that are able to walk around trick or treating. What do you do if your child is too small for that, but you still want them to celebrate Halloween anyway?

You can start by dressing them up. Babies obviously shouldn’t be wearing Halloween makeup, but there are some adorable costumes out there. Think about an adorable baby monster, monkey, or lion costume as an alternative to the common infant pumpkin costume.

Now dress yourself up! You can be a monster too! Consider doing a costume that goes with the baby’s. For example, if the baby is dressed as a lion, you could be a lion trainer. If the baby is dressed as a duck, you can dress in a mommy duck costume too!

If you love seeing all the kids in their costumes but don’t want the hassle of dragging a baby around the neighborhood, consider answering the door and handing out candy. Your little one will get plenty of oohs and aahs and you’ll still have lots of fun. Try not to eat most of it before the kids get there though!

You can also take the baby to a Halloween party. Many churches and community centers have parties as an alternative to trick or treating. You might even make new friends out of parents in the same situation.

If you can’t find a party, host your own! Invite family, friends, and neighbors over for a fun and safe Halloween alternative for everyone. Check Pinterest for some fun Halloween recipes and decorating ideas. It may just become an annual tradition. The bonus to this is that you don’t have to alter the baby’s routine. You can still feed him on schedule and put him to bed when he’s ready. It’s also nice to not have to pack up the diaper bag or use the back seat of your car as a changing table.

In some cases, you will have to take the baby or treating even if you don’t want to because you have other kids that can’t go alone. Make it easy on yourself and choose a nice neighborhood where you can all walk together with a stroller or a wagon. Go nice and early so it’s still light out and there isn’t much to be afraid of – whether it be scary costumes or teenagers with eggs, toilet paper, and shaving cream – and you’ll have a fun and safe experience.

Happy Halloween!
