Little boys love bugs, personally I’m not a huge fan. So, you can imagine my reaction when I asked my aunt what my 7 year old cousin Jayden wanted for his birthday this year and she replied, “he loves bugs.” Obviously I wasn’t going to go to the pet store and buy him bugs, nor was I going to buy him plastic bugs that looked disturbingly real so that he could spend the next year hiding them in my food and leaving them in odd places so that when I spotted them I squealed and ran out of the room.
So after hours of scouring the internet in search of “bug gifts,” I settled on the National Geographic Kids: Ultimate Bugopedia, and it far exceeded my expectations. My hopes for the book were that my cousin could use it as a “bug guide,” – and look up various bugs that he encountered and learn more about them like their habitat, what they like to eat, etc. Now, that seems pretty ambitious for a seven year old, but the Ultimate Bugopedia did just that – and made it fun!
When I received that National Geographic Kids: Ultimate Bugopedia I was thrilled to see that it wasn’t your average kids’ storybook – it was nearly as thick as a real encyclopedia! My cousin had no qualms about the books’ size though, because it was filled with 265 pages of nearly 400 colorful and life-like photographs of bugs. And, there are photos of every bug his little heart desires, ranging from bees, to butterflies, to beetles, ants, spiders, and even caterpillars.
The age range for the Ultimate Bugopedia is 7-10 years old, but the amazing thing about National Geographic is that is has been considered an informative source since the late 1800’s. So, when my cousin is in high-school and has waited until the last minute to write a ten page research paper, he can always pull out his trusty Ultimate Bugopedia for references. Also, it’s a hardcover book and high-quality, so the Ultimate Bugopedia is built to withstand the test of time … and high-strung kids.
If you have a bug lover in your midst, I highly recommend the National Geographic Kids: Ultimate Bugopedia, or any other National Geographic Kids product for that matter. National Geographic Kids products make perfect gifts for youngsters, and knowledge is the gift that keeps on giving. It can be tough to trick our children in to enjoying educational activities, but National Geographic Kids products make learning so fun, kids don’t even realize they are learning at the time!
