Spring Allergies: How To Help Your Kids Cope

Search interest in spring allergies spikes every April. As usual, interest is high right now for both adults and kids. Of course, it’s also important that you are aware of allergies if you are pregnant.

Spring Break & Miserable Kids

Although spring break dates vary, people across the country, whether in March, April, or even May, know that allergies might set off misery-inducing reactions. Sometimes, it could be pollen that causes it. Or, perhaps your child has an allergy to cat hair. If your child suffers from a sniffy nose, itchy eyes, and a bit of grumpiness because of bad sleep with a nasal drip, they could be suffering from something other than a cold.

If you take a vacation, then different vegetation could trigger an allergy. However, it’s important not to confuse an allergy with flu or cold symptoms. Ignored, it could become a worsening respiratory problem. So, if you are unsure, it’s best to consult a medical professional. Usually, an allergy doesn’t produce thick mucus or a fever, per Northwest Family Clinics.

Problems Can Occur In Early Summer

It’s time to play outdoors and enjoy the warmer weather, but so often, children get hay fever when they do that. Hay fever is an allergic reaction that is often accompanied by  sneezing and watering eyes. Sometimes, your child could suffer symptoms in early summer.

While often linked to springtime, allergic reactions similar to hay fever can certainly occur at the start of summer. This is because grass pollen, a frequent culprit for these allergies, often reaches its peak levels in late spring and continues into the early summer months.

Furthermore, the summer season can also lead to an increase in other allergy triggers like mold spores and dust mites, potentially causing similar symptoms. Read on for what you can do to help your youngsters.

Helping Kids Cope

The website gives some useful tips for coping with the pollen and other triggers. For starters, as some weather apps carry figures for pollen alerts, you can check that out before going outdoors to explore and play.

Additionally, the tips include:

  • Keep windows closed at home and in the car to prevent pollen from coming inside.
  • Encourage sunglasses and hats when playing outside to minimize pollen contact with their eyes and hair.
  • Shower and change clothes after outdoor activities to wash away lingering pollen.

Of course, if you know that your child suffers from asthma, which can also get worse alongside other spring allergies, you should make sure to have plenty of medication, if prescribed. If your kid doesn’t react to your attempts to cut down the allergen load, it’s best to see a doctor.

A medical professional might advise on whether your child needs antihistamines, eye drops, nasal rinses, or more.
