Finn didn’t realize when Sheila was finally brought to justice that the death penalty would be on the table, he hasn’t exactly studied the justice system. He thought the death penalty had been abolished-or at least on hold in California due to a governor’s order; even Charles Manson died in prison and was never executed. As the charges are pronounced that Sheila faces, the possible penalties are announced-two first degree murders with life sentences served consecutively or the death penalty.
Finn is surprised at his own reactions to the death penalty being on the table-and he suddenly feels sorry for Sheila. He is conflicted, because a death penalty will not bring remorse and punishment for her crimes-but he can see in her face it brings fear.
Finn is torn, he has no control over the jury and he sees the prosecutor is focusing on the heinous death of Lance Day (Adam Huss). The prosecutor claims Sheila knew that Lance had a deadly bee allergy and locked him in a room and released a swarm of bees; killing him by anaphylactic shock. Finn didn’t know the circumstances or the details but has to admit to himself he is shocked by that one-his birth mother must have been insane. But the prosecutor is filling in a lot of unknown details, not merely reading the autopsy report and trying to prove a motive, and then he reads the second charge. Dr. Jay Garvin’s (Brett Stimley) death is barely mentioned-it’s like the prosecutor is trying to grandstand Lance Day’s murder to get the jury all riled up.
Finn didn’t know anything about the sting that Bill Spencer (Don Diamont) and Ridge Forrester (Thorsten Kaye) had going with the FBI regarding Sheila. No one did except those involved, but Finn has to wonder if Sheila’s defense lawyer will bring up the subject of entrapment; that’s the only possible defense she could have. For all those months it was like Dollar Bill was playing a game with Sheila, and she fell for it-and everything was being recorded on a feed to the FBI.
Still, Finn doesn’t by any means want his birth mother to get out of the charges she’s facing. He just doesn’t want her to pay for them with her life-that’s not giving justice to her victims.
