The first step to take when planning these wonderful family nights is to decide how often to plan family nights and when you are going to do them. I like the idea of planning family nights weekly, but during a weekend evening. I like doing them often because our kids are only little for so long, it’s good to spend time with them while we can. I like to plan weekend evenings so that we can splurge and stay up late so we don’t end up exhausted the next day.
The next step in planning these awesome family night ideas that won’t break the bank is to come up with a list of things that everyone would like to do together. Family nights aren’t going to work very well if one or more of you just isn’t into the activity. If you are struggling to come up with ideas, not to worry, we wrote some down for you!
With Netflix, Amazon Prime, and other streaming services, movie nights are now very affordable. These are the best kind of family nights because you can all be in your pjs and relaxing comfortably at home while spending time together. Here are my favorite movie night tips for an awesome family night:
• Pick the movie beforehand. It’s not a whole lot of fun to spend all of your movie night scrolling to decide on a movie.
• Make a simple, but yummy dinner that can be enjoyed during or just before the movie. Meals such as homemade pizza or burgers and fries can make the evening seem more like a night out, which is exciting for kids.
• Pop up some popcorn for the family to enjoy while watching the movie.
Another fun family night idea that I love is the idea of having a backyard campout! It’s like camping, without the stress and expense that comes with it. Of course, you are going to want to schedule this during the nice weather, so this is likely just a summertime activity.
Grab a tent and a sleeping bag and set up camp right in your backyard. If you have an outdoor fire pit you can light a fire in it and enjoy some roasted hot dogs or marshmallows, while telling ghost stories. Or, you can relax in a camping chair or lay out on a blanket while stargazing together. It’s a lot of fun!
I love the idea of going for a nice walk together as a family. For planning a family night during the summer when it gets dark later, I would even consider a family hike at an easy trail that you can quickly do. Otherwise, even a walk around your neighborhood or local park is a great way to spend time together as a family.
Do your kids have a Tik-Tok account? If so, you might consider creating a fun Tik-Tok video with them. A teenager that I know recently told me how cool it is when kids can get their parents to take videos with them. Until I heard that, it never occured to me to make one of these videos with the kids. Plus, a lot of these videos are cute and a lot of fun!
Or, alternatively, you can simply create videos together sharing family stories or singing songs. Looking back on videos of family is always a favorite family activity, so this one could come back to be a fun family night later on.
Do you have old family videos from when the kids were younger, or maybe even before they were born? Most kids really do love to sit down and watch videos like this. It could be a really fun walk down memory lane together.
Kids love pizza nights (okay, us adults love them too). Pizza night in itself can be an awesome family night activity that won’t break the bank. You can either order take-out (find coupons to bring down the cost), or you can have homemade pizza night with the family. Homemade pizza nights are especially fun if you buy everyone their own small pizza crust and let them create their own pizzas with their favorite toppings.
Do you have any awesome family time ideas that won’t break the bank? I would love to hear all about them!
