Nothing says fall like pumpkins and they serve as such great source material for fall stories! Read on for some of my go-to pumpkin books for early readers.
Most parents know how important it is to read with their children, but sometimes it can be hard to encourage reluctant readers to get excited about reading. I always found that adding a seasonal or holiday element to my family’s at home reading helped my kids treat reading as a treat versus a chore. And fall is one of our favorite times of the year to focus on!
There are so many festive fall themed books out there for early readers and most of them have one thing in common. Do you know what that is? Pumpkins of course! And that’s just what we’re going to talk about today! I’ll be sharing some of my favorite pumpkin books for early readers, later, but first I wanted to share one of my family’s reading traditions with you.
My mom started this reading tradition with me when I was small and I continued it with my own kids when I became a mother. In the week leading up to a special day or holiday, we would read one seasonal book a night. So, the week before Halloween, for instance, we would carefully select our Halloween stack of books. Then each night we would pick a new book to read. Not only did it get me reading even more than usual, but it made that time before the holiday was even here special. I’ll always be grateful for that genius piece of parenting inspiration!
In case you too wanted to celebrate fall with your children by reading some special stories, I rounded up some of the best pumpkin books for early readers. There is no shortage of super cute pumpkin books out there, but I narrowed it down to ten for brevity’s sake. I do believe that you’ll find plenty of titles to add to your own fall reading week! And don’t worry..
And.I did not forget about our theme at hand. Each and every book has a pumpkin front and center in it. If your kids are anything like mine, they’re all about pumpkin anything. Of course, I’ve been known to consume my fair share of pumpkin spice lattes ALL season long, so the apple, or the pumpkin, doesn’t fall far from the tree..or the patch rather. Haha!
Now, most of these pumpkin books work for kids from preschool age through first or 2nd grade, so your early reader should be covered In fact,.I’ve read most of these books to kids of many different ages and they all loved them!

So, are you ready to plan your week of fall holiday reading or what? Remember there doesn’t necessarily have to be a holiday attached to your family reading tradition. Fall is reason enough to celebrate with some new stories! You’ll never regret fostering your child’s affinity for books! Or their love of the seasons for that matter.
The earlier you start, the better. Early readers respond so well to encouragement. And what’s more encouraging than reading a festive new book about a funny little pumpkin while cuddled up with Mom?! That sure sounds like a pretty good time to me! How about you? Happy fall y’all!
