How to Entertain a Toddler at a Wedding – Our Tips!

Attending weddings is supposed to be a fun and joyous occasion. However, if you have to take along your toddler, it can be a bit more challenging.  Now you know I have two toddlers and a six-year old so I have to do things to keep the girls occupied and happy.

Don’t get me wrong, for the most part, all my girls are well-mannered and well-behaved. However, there is no child alive that has the stamina or self-control to sit still and quiet for a ceremony, not to mention to remain good and content during the hours long reception to follow. The good news is, I have learned a few tricks that work for my girls – Ava, Ella and Rose – that help them remain quiet and happy during a wedding.

Quiz Time

This is really only a tactic that works with Ava, but I soon plan to bring Ella and Rose into the fun as soon as they are a bit older. I will ask them questions, such as “who is the oldest person in the room” or challenge them to draw a picture of the wedding cake. I even keep small prizes in my purse, such as mints or quarters, when she gets done.

Pack an Activity Briefcase

Many couples plan for kids. This means they have games, crayons and other fun items available. However, this isn’t always the case. In these situations, I like to have a little briefcase (or bag) of activities to keep them busy. This typically includes snacks and juice, crayons and stickers, and other items they can play with that will keep them busy for a while.

Bubbles

If the wedding or reception are outside, feel free to take along some bubbles. There are many couples that choose this for their send-off, rather than rice, so they will have them on-hand. It is a good idea to stow some in your bag to take along, just in case.

Take along a Babysitter

If you are in the wedding, or going to be tied up talking to adults, consider hiring a babysitter for the day to come along and play with the kids. They can dance, play and ensure your child has fun, while you enjoy the day, too.

Weddings are an exciting and fun time. Taking your kids along is a great way to make them part of the festivities. However, you need to make sure you have a few things for them to do. This will help make the experience for them – and you – much better and less stressful.
