Reading is my release from everyday life! When my 3-year-old daughter is in bed and I have made sure all the work for the day is done I sit down and unwind with a good book. My reading preferences really vary depending on my mood. If I’m reading during the day I like to read art history books, but at night I like to sit down with an easy-to-read romance novel.
Like most moms, I’m busy most moments of the day, so I don’t have time to make it to the bookstore frequently. For that reason, I read my books via the Kobo app with my e-reader. The Kobo app is free and can be used on any hand held device you already own. The Kobo content store is also a great place to get suggestions for new books and read reviews on the bestsellers.
The book that I anticipated the most this year was the last book, The Book of Life in the popular All Souls Trilogy by Deborah Harkness. I waited a whole year for this book and had it on preorder, so I would be able to read it the day it came out! I won’t give to many details because the book is apart of a trilogy, but the series encompasses all the genres I love in one – Romance, Paranormal, Fantasy and Science Fiction.
What was your favorite book this year? I’m always curious to hear what other people are downloading and reading, so I was really interested to read Kobo’s Inaugural Book Report, which reveals the top eReading trends from 2014. The first thing I looked at was the most downloaded books of the year. I was surprised to see that I hadn’t read any of these books, despite my reading addiction.
EBOOK MUST HAVES – 2014’s Bestsellers
Gone Girl – Gillian Flynn
The Fault in Our Stars – John Green
Insurgent – Veronica Roth
Allegiant – Veronica Roth
Divergent – Veronica Roth
The Goldfinch – Donna Tartt
Written in My Own Heart’s Blood – Diana Gabaldon
The Rosie Project – Graeme Simsion
The Husband’s Secret – Liane Moriarty
Philomena – Martin Sixsmith
It’s interesting that many of these books had movies that came out this year. Many people probably bought these books to read before watching the movie or alternatively read the book after watching the movie. The movie, Philomena really touched my heart as a mother and I would love to read the actual book this holiday season.
The report also revealed that these books may be the most downloaded, but were not necessarily the most read. I was surprised to learn that overall, Canadians find romance to be the most engaging genre, with 62 per cent completion. That means that there are a lot of moms like me! Reading at night and enjoying a good romance fantasy!
When the weather outside is frightful, Canadians also find eReading delightful! Canadians turned nearly 300 million virtual pages on Kobo devices over the holidays last year, with 16 million on Christmas Day alone. That probably means a new e-reader, like the Kobo H2O is on many people’s wish list this holiday season. The Kobo H2O is waterproof and dustproof, so you can really read anywhere! Use it at the pool, the beach or your bathtub without the worry of getting your e-reader damaged!
